Giant Scabious

Giant scabious is an imposing solitary perennial that will bring a striking vertical structure and natural wild charm to the garden. It comes from the mountain meadows of the Caucasus, which dictates its growing requirements. From the delivered seedling, a highly noticeable plant with a massive, sparsely branched growth will quickly grow in full sun or partial shade and humus-rich loamy soil. Given its dimensions, we recommend planting one piece per square meter. It commonly reaches a height of up to two and a half meters, yet it needs no support at all. From June to August, it forms scabiosa-like flowers in pastel yellow to lime colors on long stems. This creates a very effective contrast between the relatively massive bulk of green leaves and the airy, wiry stems with small flower heads. It resists frosts down to minus thirty-four degrees without any problems, does not suffer from diseases or pests, and easily self-seeds. It is a highly attractive lure for bees and other pollinators. The unusual flowers are perfectly suited for cutting; they last about five days in a vase. The faded inflorescences are also interesting, useful for drying and floristry purposes. If you leave them in the flower bed, they will provide a beautiful winter effect.
