Spurges

It is a typical Mediterranean species that tolerates drought and heat well here, but not winter waterlogging. The wulfenii cultivar should be less sensitive to cold, but intolerance to winter waterlogging remains. Plant in protected places, e.g., in front of a warm house wall in Mediterranean-style beds. Floristically, it is valuable for its greenery and early flowering. Lasts 7–10 days in a vase. Beware of the milky sap in the stems, which can irritate the skin.

Spurges are suitable for growing in sunny gravel beds. They form shrubby hemispherical clumps with fine, narrow grey-green leaves on slender stems. They bloom later than other spurges and then flower for a very long time, remaining fresh green until autumn.

A perennial Euphorbia native to Nepal. It has narrow leaves with a characteristic white central vein and lime green flowers.

Ačkoliv se jedná o spíše krátkověkou trvalku, během svého života vytvoří husté trsy, které efektivně vyplní prostor mezi ostatními rostlinami a dorůstají výšky až 60 centimetrů. Je to vděčná rostlina i pro začínající zahradníky, protože netrpí na choroby ani škůdce a bez problémů zvládá mrazy až do -20 °C. Květy jsou navíc plné nektaru, takže na jaře spolehlivě přilákají včely a další opylovače. Miners Merlot se skvěle hodí i k řezu do vázy, kde svými limetkovými květy dodá kyticím svěžest a moderní vzhled. Při manipulaci s rostlinou je však třeba dbát zvýšené opatrnosti a ideálně používat rukavice, protože roní bílé mléko, které je jedovaté a může dráždit pokožku.

A native species of moisture-loving spurge. It grows wild primarily in the Elbe region and southern Moravia. Its natural habitats are wet and flooded meadows, river floodplains, and floodplain forests. In the garden, it tolerates full sun and partial shade, always depending on moisture conditions. It can also grow in a regular bed and finds use on the banks of garden ponds or in waterlogged places. Besides its blooming time, it is also interesting in autumn when its leaves color into red shades.

A species of spurge native to the Mediterranean, from stony and dry slopes. It grows in clumps, forming prostrate shoots with spirally arranged leaves. Here, it is cultivated as a rock garden plant. Thanks to its trailing growth, it works well in containers, on low walls at the edges of terraces and walkways.

This spurge is also known by the name Euphorbia polychroma. It naturally grows in Central and Southern Europe on sunny slopes and in bright forest edges. For the spring garden, it is an indispensable perennial in combination with, for example, bleeding hearts, tulips, and daffodils.

Spurge native to Italy and Sicily. Finely branched. It has a more airy habit than, for example, Euphorbia polychroma.
