The 'Blue Giant' variety of Siberian squill is a small spring bulb that brings some of the first colors to gardens after a long winter. It originally comes from the mountainous regions of Asia Minor and reached Europe as early as the sixteenth century. Bright blue flowers with a striking white center grow from the small bulbs in early spring. Although it belongs to the lower-growing species, the 'Blue Giant' cultivar lives up to its name and excels with slightly larger flowers than are common for Siberian squills. Especially when planted in larger groups, it creates an impressive sight. It is perfectly suited as an underplanting for deciduous trees and shrubs, where spring sunlight can still easily reach. It also looks very nice in natural meadows or directly in a manicured lawn, where it willingly spreads over time to form dense carpets. Because it blooms as early as March, it serves as an extremely important source of the first nectar for awakening bees, bumblebees, and other insects. It complements other early-blooming bulbs, such as snowdrops or early daffodils, creating a varied spring mosaic in the flower bed.

The 'Alba' variety of Siberian squill is a small and extremely elegant bulb that follows the long tradition of popular spring flowers. In early spring, each bulb sends up several narrow green leaves and a stalk bearing a cluster of radiant, star-shaped flowers. While its close relatives often boast blue shades, the 'Alba' cultivar brings a pure white color with a delicate center to your plantings. It stays closer to the ground in terms of height, usually growing only about fifteen centimeters, but thanks to its early flowering in March, you definitely won't miss it in the flower bed. Its effortless appearance makes it suitable for natural-style plantings, for livening up a lawn, or as an underplanting for larger deciduous trees. Once you establish it in a suitable spot, it will willingly spread. Additionally, the open flowers provide much-needed first food for bees and other pollinators waking up in the spring.
