Scabious
Scabious is a fantastic choice for anyone looking to bring a bit of meadow-like freedom and interesting structure to their flower beds. From an unassuming rosette of leaves at the base, straight stems emerge, initially topped with round, bead-like buds. These gradually open into delicate flowers that reliably attract bees and bumblebees. These plants thrive best in full sun and well-drained soil. You can choose perennial varieties that reliably survive the winter, or profuse-flowering annuals in vibrant colours. Whether you try sowing from seeds or prefer to go for ready-made seedlings, scabious will quickly settle into your garden. Beyond looking beautiful outdoors, they are also popular as cut flowers. Their straight stems are easy to arrange in vases. Here at Loukykvět, we also like to let some of the plants finish blooming. They leave behind firm, round seed heads that are perfect for drying and using in dried arrangements.

Scabiosa stellata
Starflower Scabiosa
Some flower species look great even after blooming, and we harvest them on the farm too. But Scabiosa, Scabiosa is so beautiful that there is even a species not grown for the flower, but for drying as a pod. Scabiosa stellata blooms white, but it pays to persist and not harvest the flowers; what comes after them is much more beautiful than the flower. At the end of straight and strong stems are seeds arranged in a perfect little ball. Suitable for drying.
For drying, we harvest mature seed heads, roughly from mid-July. Just hang them upside down in a dry and ventilated place, out of sunlight.

Scabiosa caucasica
Scabiosa Fama Deep Blue
A beautiful perennial that we love on the farm not only for its large petals but also for its round seed heads suitable for drying. Although smaller than the starflower Scabiosa, it is ideal for arrangements. Bees and bumblebees also can't get enough of this perennial! Just be careful, it doesn't like high humidity as it risks rotting, so it is better suited for a semi-dry, sunny location.
