Honesty

Honesty is a traditional biennial that our grandmothers used to have in abundance in their gardens. In spring, it will delight you with a flood of fragrant flowers that keep company with dame's rocket or columbines. However, its main charm comes in the summer, when it forms seeds wrapped in beautiful oval discs.

It is precisely for these fruits that we love growing honesty here. The flowers themselves are not particularly suitable for cutting, so it pays off to wait for the summer harvest. The dried silvery or greenish-purple discs look magnificent and will last for long months in dry arrangements.

Growing it is not complicated, but it does require a bit of patience. Like a proper biennial, it needs time to develop during the first year so it can fully show off its beauty in the next season. You will gain a low-maintenance plant that connects your garden with tradition and provides excellent material for winter crafting.

Lunaria annua

A classic of dried flowers; our grandmothers had gardens full of honesty. It blooms in spring just like sweet rocket or columbine, but the flowers aren't suitable for cutting. It pays to wait, and in summer you can harvest the first fruits. Honesty creates seeds wrapped in beautiful oval pods. We recommend harvesting them even when green; they look beautiful in bouquets! And that is the difference between white and purple honesty. The white one has fresh green pods the color of peas. Dried, they look the same for both species. For drying, we harvest pods from which the seed casings are already naturally falling off. Just hang them upside down in a dry and ventilated place, out of sunlight.
