A valuable, long-lived perennial, ideal for naturalistic beds on the northern side of buildings, in shade and partial shade. It grows in upright clumps. The flowers are large, striking, and reddish-purple-brown. It tolerates root competition from woody plants, making it suitable for underplanting.
