Dianthus cruentus
Blood pink brings the true meadow charm to gardens. This undemanding perennial originally comes from the Balkans and Turkey. In its homeland, it inhabits sunny rocky slopes, and therefore it feels best here in full sun in well-drained, even poorer soil. It is an ideal plant for gravel beds or natural-style steppe compositions, where its thin, up to fifty-centimeter-tall stems create an effect of airiness and lightness. From June to August, deep blood-red inflorescences sway on sturdy stems, looking like tiny floating gems. Thanks to its structure, it functions as a so-called see-through plant, allowing you to see other perennials in the background, thereby adding depth to the flower bed. The flowers smell gently and act as a reliable magnet for butterflies and bees. It is also suitable for cutting into a vase, where it stays fresh for a relatively long time and gives bouquets a modern, airy look. The plant is fully frost-hardy and happily self-seeds in a suitable location, thereby taking care of the natural dynamics of your garden.
