Cosmos

Cosmos is an absolute classic and a firm favourite here at Loukykvět. Because of their lightness and delicacy, they are among the most popular annuals for cutting. During the season, we cut hundreds of stems every day because they simply belong in summer bouquets. In the flower bed, they quickly create a wonderful volume and bloom tirelessly from summer until the first frosts. Although a traditional cosmos resembles a large daisy in shape, today's cultivars can be surprising. You can choose from fully double-flowered varieties as fluffy as cotton candy, flower shapes like little bundt cakes, or petals fused into interesting tubes. Their colours also go far beyond white and pink; you can choose from pastel yellow, peach, and deep burgundy tones. Growing them from seed is easy, and they will thrive even for complete beginners. You can start the plants early in spring by following our sowing guide, or opt for direct sowing straight into the soil later on. The main rule for cosmos is: the more you cut them for vases, the more new flowers they will produce.

Cosmos Cherry Chocolate, Loukykvět
New

Cosmos atrosanguineus

Cosmos 'Cherry Chocolate' will win you over with its distinct cherry red color and unique chocolate fragrance. Its original wild ancestors come from sunny Mexico, which is why even here it prefers full sun and well-drained sandy or loamy soil. The fresh green bushes of the 'Cherry Chocolate' cultivar stand out among all chocolate cosmos with the largest flowers, which grow up to seven centimeters in diameter. You will receive a well-rooted seedling from us. You can place it on the terrace or sink it along with the pot directly into the flower bed at a spacing of about fifty centimeters, where it will beautifully complement ornamental grasses. Botanically, it is a short-lived perennial suitable for more advanced growers, as it is grown as a portable container plant. For the winter, we recommend removing it and moving it to a frost-free room; it only tolerates temperatures down to minus twelve degrees. The flowers appear from July to October and act as a magnet for pollinators. The plant does not suffer from diseases or pests and requires medium watering. The radiant cherry flowers are excellent for bouquets; cut them fully open for the vase.

Cosmos Eclipse, Loukykvět
New

Cosmos atrosanguineus

Chocolate Cosmos brings a piece of exotic Mexico to gardens. This unusual species attracts from afar with its typical scent reminiscent of dark chocolate, and the 'Eclipse' cultivar adds stunning velvety flowers in a dark burgundy color. You will receive a rooted seedling from us, which you can easily transplant according to your needs. Given its origin, it loves full sun and well-drained, slightly moist soil. It grows as a short-lived perennial, and because it only tolerates frost down to about minus twelve degrees, it is most often grown as a portable container plant. It looks great in a large pot on a balcony or terrace, but you can also hide it with the container in a flower bed among ornamental grasses, where it will bloom continuously from July to October. With the arrival of winter, you simply take it out and store it in a frost-free room. It reliably attracts many bees and other beneficial pollinators. Furthermore, the dark red flower heads are perfect for cutting. In a vase, they create an impressive contrast to more delicate light flowers and stay fresh for many days. The cosmos doesn't need any complex pest or disease care, so even someone who is just starting with similar portable species will quickly make friends with it.

Cosmos atrosanguineus

Chocolate Cosmos is an interesting perennial originating from sunny Mexico, where it grows in warmer areas in full sun in well-drained sandy and loamy soil. It did not earn its name by chance, as its velvety burgundy flowers emit a very striking scent reminiscent of dark chocolate. From us, you will receive a fully grown seedling in a pot, which just needs to be transplanted. Because the plant can only handle frosts down to minus twelve degrees, it requires somewhat more advanced care and is most often grown as a container plant. It will thrive wonderfully in a larger pot on a sunny terrace, or you can simply sink the pot into a perennial bed. Before winter arrives, you can easily remove it and store it in a cool, frost-free room. From July to October, the cosmos will reward you with a rich flood of flowers that reliably attract bees and butterflies. It is a healthy plant that does not suffer from diseases or pests. The fragrant flowers on sturdy stems look beautiful in summer bouquets and will stay beautiful in a vase for many days.
