Euphorbia

Euphorbia is a highly diverse perennial that works perfectly in flower beds as a foundation for more colourful plants. Some species thrive in dry and hot spots or gravel plantings, while others appreciate moister soil and can even tolerate partial shade. Most of them share an interesting leaf structure and often vibrant lime-coloured inflorescences that remain fresh for many weeks. In a spring garden, these plants have a firm place. Their unconventional colouring and airy shape create a nice contrast to spring bulbs. They look excellent next to striking flowers, so if you are currently finding out how to grow tulips, don't forget to add Euphorbia to the bed with them. When maintaining them, just keep in mind that the stems exude a white sap after cutting, which can irritate the skin, so it's a good idea to wear gloves.

Euphorbia Wulfenii, Loukykvět

Euphorbia characias wulfenii

It is a typical Mediterranean species that tolerates drought and heat well here, but not winter waterlogging. The wulfenii cultivar should be less sensitive to cold, but intolerance to winter waterlogging remains. Plant in protected places, e.g., in front of a warm house wall in Mediterranean-style beds. Floristically, it is valuable for its greenery and early flowering. Lasts 7–10 days in a vase. Beware of the milky sap in the stems, which can irritate the skin.

Flowering Spurge, Loukykvět

Euphorbia corollata

Flowering spurge is an inconspicuous but immensely charming North American prairie perennial that will bring lightness and airiness into every garden. In its homeland, it grows on sun-drenched open areas as well as in light rocky forests. It therefore thrives in full sun in well-draining, loamy, or sandy soil. As soon as you transplant our mature seedling into the flowerbed, it will quickly take hold and become a very undemanding plant suitable even for beginners. It will playfully survive even severe frosts dropping to minus twenty-eight degrees. In contrast to its more robust relatives, this spurge acts very delicately. From June to August, it forms a flood of tiny white flowers that reliably attract bees as well as butterflies. However, during care, remember that like all spurges, it exudes a white sap that can trigger an allergic reaction in sensitive people. It will perfectly fit into drought-tolerant plantings, where you can also cut its flowers into summer bouquets. It preserves its beauty even after flowering, when with the arrival of autumn its leaves color into interesting red tones. Moreover, it does not suffer from any diseases or pests.

Marsh spurge, Loukykvět

Euphorbia palustris

A native species of moisture-loving spurge. It grows wild primarily in the Elbe region and southern Moravia. Its natural habitats are wet and flooded meadows, river floodplains, and floodplain forests. In the garden, it tolerates full sun and partial shade, always depending on moisture conditions. It can also grow in a regular bed and finds use on the banks of garden ponds or in waterlogged places. Besides its blooming time, it is also interesting in autumn when its leaves color into red shades.
