Bugleweed

Bugle is an undemanding perennial that will save even the shadiest spots in your garden. Originally a plant of moist deciduous forests and meadows, it naturally thrives in partial shade and shade, where it has access to enough moisture and humus-rich soil. Thanks to its ability to spread quickly via surface runners, it acts as a reliable ground-covering plant. Bugle soon creates a dense carpet that effectively suppresses weed growth and easily covers bare patches under trees or larger shrubs. In spring, it also comes alive with tiny flowers. Simply put, it is a hardy worker that provides a lot of beauty with minimal care.

Ajuga reptans

Creeping bugleweed is the unappreciated hero of shady and semi-shady corners of the garden, where it forms dense and closed carpets. Originally a woodland plant, it occurs naturally in moist forests and meadows across Europe, making it an exceptionally hardy and adaptable perennial. Its main advantage is the ability to spread quickly using creeping runners, thereby suppressing weed growth without being aggressive toward larger plants. In May and June, racemes of blue-purple flowers rise above the rosettes of often bronze or purple-tinged leaves, literally magnetizing bees and bumblebees searching for nectar. Although it is not suitable for cutting, it fulfills its function perfectly in the garden as a lawn alternative under trees or on slopes where ordinary grass fails to thrive. Thanks to its high frost resistance and low maintenance, it is an ideal choice even for beginner gardeners who want to liven up darker and damper parts of their property.

Ajuga reptans

Bugleweed Catlin's Giant is a true giant among groundcover perennials and an excellent choice for shady corners. The original botanical species is found in the undergrowth of deciduous forests and on damper meadows in Europe, so even in the garden it loves semi-shady locations with humus-rich and loamy soil that does not dry out. This cultivar stands out with unusually large, glossy leaves in bronze to burgundy-brown shades, which reliably cover the area and give weeds no chance. From April to June, striking blue-purple inflorescences up to 30 cm tall bloom above the dark leaves, serving as a valuable source of nectar for bees and other pollinators. Although it is not suitable for cutting into a vase, it performs its function perfectly in the bed. It is fully frost-resistant and requires almost no care, making it an ideal plant even for beginner gardeners who want to quickly green up empty spaces under trees or shrubs.
