Poppy

Poppies are such rewarding plants. They are perfect for filling the gap between late spring and early summer, after the ranunculus have finished blooming and there is still plenty of time before the first dahlias appear. From delicate Iceland poppies, which add lightness to bouquets with their silky petals, to peony-flowered varieties with large, double blooms – there is a place for each of them in the garden. At Loukykvět, we love using them in wedding floristry. Aside from fresh flowers, some varieties also offer wonderful dried seed heads. Simply dry them in a well-ventilated spot and save them for autumn arrangements. If you are looking for a reliable long-term plant, go for Oriental poppies. These hardy perennials easily handle frosts and will reliably return to your flower bed year after year. Most annual poppies prefer cooler weather at the start of the season and a sunny spot with well-draining soil. Growing them is not complicated; you just need to master direct sowing straight into the ground, or you can start them as seedlings. If you choose the latter, our guide on how to sow seeds at home will come in handy.

Poppy Champagne Bubbles Discover Mix, Loukykvět
Mix barev

Papaver nudicaule

✨ Color mix created at Loukykvět ✨ Champagne Bubbles series poppies are perennials. In our opinion, a great and affordable alternative to Iceland poppies! If you can't decide which color is the right one, we have a color mix for you! Discover Mix blooms in all available shades (orange, scarlet, yellow, white, and pink), so you can discover, try out, and admire! If we wanted to compare the Colibri and Champagne Bubbles series, the first difference is that Colibri are annuals. But the benefits of the Champagne Bubbles series don't end there - they are also more financially accessible than the Italian Colibri version, they have better germination, and the seeds are even directly primed for better germination. And we also promise that they won't be sold out as often, because they aren't bred in Italy and therefore communication and delivery times won't be so "Italian". But now for the disadvantages: compared to Colibri they don't have such large flowers, the stems are less robust, and some color variants are missing. But all in all, that makes them a great poppy!

Poppy Colibri Rosa Chiaro Pastello, Loukykvět

Papaver nudicaule

Icelandic poppies belong among our most favorite items ever! The delicate silky flowers give a light and airy impression whether in a bouquet, vase, or flower bed. In wedding floristry, there is no flower that matches them in texture and appearance. They like low temperatures, so we grow them only in spring. But believe us, you will miss them terribly all year until the next spring! One plant produces at least 12 flowers. Colibri Rosa "Chiaro Pastello" are delicate shades of skin-tone, champagne, apricot, and peach. A gem!

Peony Poppy Pale Rose, Loukykvět

Papaver paeoniflorum

Large double flowers are missing at the turn of spring and summer. The last Ranunculus finish blooming and there is plenty of time before the first Dahlias arrive. On our farm, it was always a struggle to find beautiful, full, and large flowers for bouquets at that time. But we succeeded! We filled the void with China asters and peony-flowered Poppies. These Poppies reliably replace peonies, Ranunculus, and Dahlias. Just keep in mind that they don't last long and need a little care to last in a bouquet. We harvest when the bud cracks, sear the ends of the stems in water for a few seconds, and let them finish opening in the vase. Peony Poppy Salmon is a warm pink color. For drying, we harvest mature poppy heads, roughly from mid-July. Just hang them upside down, in a dry and ventilated place, out of sunlight.
