Campion

Campions are reliable perennials that bring life to country and naturalistic gardens. They stand out for their diversity, and when choosing them, it's worth remembering that different species have quite different requirements for their location.

While Rose Campion, with its striking flowers and silvery, woolly leaves, loves full sun and doesn't mind dry or poorer soil, Ragged Robin prefers moisture. It is a fantastic addition to the banks of garden ponds or damper meadows, adding an airy touch thanks to its finely fringed flowers. These can also be cut for a vase.

What all these species have in common is that they are low-maintenance and can easily handle our winters. Although Rose Campion is somewhat short-lived, in the right spot, it will happily self-seed in your beds. If you want to grow these plants from seed yourself, take a look at our tips on how to sow directly.

Campion, Loukykvět

Lychnis coronaria

Rose campion is a striking perennial that will bring a bold color contrast and a unique texture to the garden. It originally comes from the sunny and dry regions of southern Europe and Asia, where it grows on rocky and poor soils. Thanks to this, it is exceptionally undemanding and will handle even harsh frosts without problems here. It forms clumps with silver, softly felted stems and gray-green leaves that look decorative even before blooming. During June and July, vibrant fuchsia-pink to purple flowers appear on the stems. Rose campion blooms for a very long time, as a new little flower blooms every day and replaces the previous one. It is a short-lived perennial, but in a suitable location, it easily self-seeds. It does not suffer from any diseases or pests, which will be appreciated especially by beginner growers. It is perfectly suited for cutting into summer bouquets.

Campion Alba, Loukykvět

Lychnis coronaria

The inconspicuous yet charming rose campion 'Alba' will bring softness and lightness to your plantings. In the wild, it grows on sunny and rocky hillsides, which is why it will appreciate full sun and well-drained, rather poorer soil in your garden. It doesn't mind drought, withstands severe frosts, and is avoided by diseases and pests, making it an ideal choice for beginners. This short-lived perennial grows to a height of around seventy centimeters and has silver, softly felted stems and leaves. The 'Alba' variety is an elegant pure white variant that blooms for a very long time throughout the whole summer. A new flower opens every day to replace yesterday's, so the plant always looks full of life. Moreover, the flowers reliably attract pollinators. It applies excellently in natural and gravel beds, where it needs no support, and thanks to self-seeding, it will last in its spot for many years. The delicate stems with flowers are suitable for cutting and beautifully complement fresh bouquets in a vase, but they are not used for drying in dried arrangements.
