Bee balm

Monarda, often referred to as bee balm or wild bergamot, originally hails from the plains and forest edges of North America. These distinctively fragrant plants are popular for both their aromatic leaves and unique flowers. In the garden, they are a major draw for bees, bumblebees, and other pollinators. They are useful in ornamental beds as well as in the kitchen. The leaves smell like lemon, mint, or oregano and are perfect for preparing refreshing teas. Moreover, their long and sturdy stems make monarda an excellent cut flower that stays fresh in a vase for a long time. We grow some of them as perennials, while others thrive here better as annuals that are capable of self-seeding. Most prefer a sunny spot. To keep the plants from suffering from powdery mildew, a common fungal leaf disease that appears as a white coating, it is important to give them enough space in the bed for good air circulation.

Monarda hybride

Monardas, or bee balms, originate from the eastern parts of North America. They most often grow along paths, in thickets, and on the edges of light forests. They are honey-bearing aromatic plants, perfectly usable for cutting and in the kitchen. Schneewitchen is an older proven variety that is still considered the best of the white-flowering ones today.
