Lamiastrum galeobdolon
Yellow archangel is an ideal choice for those looking for a way to brighten up shady and damp corners of the garden. This native woodland herb occurs naturally in deciduous and mixed forests across Europe, where it forms extensive carpets under tree canopies. Thanks to its low maintenance and ability to grow even in deeper shade, it is an invaluable helper when planting areas under shrubs or mature trees, where other perennials do not thrive well. Its lemon-yellow lipped flowers appear as early as April and May, bringing spring freshness to the garden and at the same time providing the first valuable food for waking bumblebees and bees. The ornamental value of the plant is also enhanced by its decorative leaves, which are often adorned with silvery markings and remain attractive throughout the growing season. The archangel spreads vigorously using above-ground creeping runners and quickly knits together a cover, thereby effectively suppressing weed growth and retaining moisture in the soil. It is a long-lived and fully frost-resistant perennial that requires almost no care and is suitable even for beginner gardeners. Although it is not used for cutting into vases or for drying, it fulfills its function perfectly in a natural garden as a reliable and aesthetic groundcover element.
