St. John's wort

St. John's wort is an inseparable part of a Czech summer, lighting up flower beds and the open countryside with its typical yellow blooms. These low-maintenance perennials and semi-shrubs handle sunny and drier spots perfectly, though some varieties thrive in the shade as well. They are a great choice for anyone looking for hardy plants that require minimal care and watering. Besides traditional varieties, you will also find specially bred cultivars popular in floristry. For them, it only starts with the flowers. After blooming, slightly pointed colorful berries appear on the branches; while not edible, they serve a fantastic decorative purpose. They hold firmly on the plant and stand out perfectly in autumn arrangements or cut bouquets, adding an interesting structure. Moreover, the bushes often bloom again right after the first batch of berries ripens.

Hypericum calycinum

The golden flowers of the St. John's wort will reliably brighten up your garden from summer through autumn. This subshrub originates from the mountainous regions of the Balkans, where it has adapted to diverse natural conditions. It tolerates direct sun exceptionally well but also thrives in partial shade or full shade, where other plants might fail. It likes well-drained loamy or sandy soil and average watering. From the supplied rooted seedling, it will quickly grow into a compact plant about thirty centimeters tall. When planted thirty to forty centimeters apart, it will soon form a dense cover. The striking yellow flowers are full of pollinators and bees throughout the summer. It does not offer flowers suitable for vases, so its primary role lies in perennial plantings and as a groundcover under shrubs. It does not need support, you don't need to worry about pests, and it reliably resists frosts down to minus twenty-three degrees Celsius. Sometimes rust can appear on the leaves. It also creates an attractive winter effect in the garden. Because it is a poisonous plant, caution is advised if you share your garden with pets.

Hypericum perforatum

The golden-yellow flood of flowers of St. John's wort inherently belongs to the Czech summer and the rural landscape. This undemanding perennial naturally inhabits sunny hillsides, balks, and drier meadows, making it an ideal candidate for gardens with minimal watering and care requirements. It grows up to 70 cm tall and forms upright, richly branched clumps that are literally covered in tiny, radiant flowers with conspicuous stamens in midsummer. It is an excellent choice for beginner growers, as it will forgive even poorer and well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. In addition to its ornamental value, St. John's wort is a significant honey-bearing plant that will attract useful pollinators to the garden. It also applies great in floristry; it stays fresh in a vase making you happy for several days, but even more often it is dried for winter decorations and medicinal tea blends.
