Thermopsis villosa

The bright yellow flowers of false lupine will reliably enliven any spring bed. In appearance, this decorative and hardy perennial strongly resembles the classic lupine, but it offers a much longer lifespan and absolute undemandingness. In nature, it grows on mountain slopes and open clearings of North America. Thus, it is naturally accustomed to full sun and partial shade and will surprise you with its extreme frost resistance; it will survive even the harshest winters deep below freezing without any problems. Ordinary loamy soil with moderate moisture is enough for it. From the delivered mature potted seedling, a strong clump of green leaves with a rich root system will quickly grow after transplanting. It is precisely because of its strong roots that false lupine is popularly planted for slope stabilization. It grows very healthily and does not suffer from pests or diseases, so even a complete beginner can handle caring for it. It reaches a height of up to one hundred and forty centimeters and acts as a great backdrop for shorter species in the flower bed. During May and June, the plant is literally covered in flowers, which are constantly worked on by bees and bumblebees. You can boldly cut the sturdy stems for a vase, where they will brighten the interior for many days. The whole plant serves florists equally well, as the attractive leaves and, later, the ripening seed pods offer perfect material for drying and creating dry natural arrangements.

Thermopsis chinensis

The bright yellow flowers of the Thermopsis 'Sunrise' will brighten up your garden as early as late May, when striking raceme inflorescences appear on its sturdy stems. In appearance, it slightly resembles the well-known lupine, but unlike it, it is an exceptionally long-lived and hardy perennial. It naturally grows on open slopes and mountain meadows in Asia, which is why it will do best in full sun or light partial shade in well-drained loamy soil. From the supplied mature potted seedling, a rich clump reaching up to eighty centimeters in height will quickly grow after transplanting into the flowerbed. The plant develops a very strong root system, which helps it survive drought and severe frosts without difficulty. These deep roots even excellently stabilize the soil, so Thermopsis is often used in slope and anti-erosion plantings. During flowering, bees and other beneficial insects gather around the plant, for which it is a sought-after food source. The 'Sunrise' cultivar requires no special care, is avoided by diseases and pests, and will bring joy even to complete beginners. It fits perfectly into colorful perennial beds, and its long, sturdy stems are perfect for cutting into a vase, where they create a beautiful spring detail.
