Snowflake

The Gravetye Giant summer snowflake is a charming wild perennial native to Western, Central, and Southern Europe, bringing subtle beauty and freshness to the spring garden. Compared to the more familiar spring snowflake, it is much taller, reaching heights of forty to sixty centimeters, and it blooms somewhat later. From April to June, it produces slender, bell-shaped flowers in a pure white color, which are also pleasantly fragrant. Its deep green leaves remain attractive in the garden for a long time, even as the plant naturally retreats underground for the summer. It thrives in the garden in moister spots in partial shade or sun and combines perfectly with plants like bleeding hearts or other moisture-loving species. It is also well-suited for planting in containers and pots; you just need to ensure the soil never dries out. During flowering, the snowflake is a great attractant for bees and other pollinators, offering them valuable food. Although the plant is poisonous, a major advantage is that it is avoided by diseases and pests. Sturdy stems with white flowers are also ideal for cutting; they last a long time fresh in a vase and will fill your home with a spring atmosphere.

The spring snowflake is a native woodland perennial. It grows naturally in moist mixed and floodplain forests and is a protected species. It thrives in the moist environment of stream and river banks. In such settings, it spreads well on its own into large colonies. The leaves appear together with the flowers, and the plants die back relatively soon after finishing blooming. The drooping bell-shaped flowers grow singly, or rarely in pairs. It propagates best by dividing clumps immediately after flowering.
