Fritillary

For us at Loukykvět, Fritillaria is one of the most interesting spring bulbs because it brings completely new shapes to the garden beds. Its flowers look like small to large bells hanging downwards on sturdy stems. You can choose from smaller species that spread easily in naturalistic plantings, or tall ones that stand out at the back of the beds. Most Fritillaria bloom a bit later than tulips and daffodils. They cleverly fill the empty space in the garden before the summer annuals fully take over. Beyond their ornamental role, the taller varieties are also an excellent choice for spring cut flowers in vases. We plant Fritillaria bulbs in the autumn, ideally in a sunny spot. Especially for more robust species like the Persian Fritillary, well-draining soil is crucial, as the bulbs can rot over winter in waterlogged ground. Once they are settled in the right spot, they will reliably bloom for many years to come.

Fritillaria uva-vulpis, Loukykvět

Fritillaria uva-vulpis

Fritillaria uva-vulpis is a smaller bulbous plant that will delight you in the spring with its original appearance. In April and May, it produces bell-shaped flowers on twenty to thirty-centimeter tall stems in chestnut brown shades with a purple tint and a distinctive yellowish rim. Green to grey-green leaves delicately complement the plant's overall structure. It is one of the least demanding fritillaries, making it perfect for natural plantings as well as classic spring flower beds where it spreads well. Early in the spring, its flowers attract bees, bumblebees, and other insects, providing them with a valuable source of nectar. From us, you will receive healthy bulbs that will reliably survive even hard frosts. You can confidently use the bell-shaped flowers for your first spring bouquets; they look very playful in a vase and complement other smaller bulbous plants perfectly.
