Poppies are such rewarding plants. They are perfect for filling the gap between late spring and early summer, after the ranunculus have finished blooming and there is still plenty of time before the first dahlias appear. From delicate Iceland poppies, which add lightness to bouquets with their silky petals, to peony-flowered varieties with large, double blooms – there is a place for each of them in the garden. Simply dry them in a well-ventilated spot and save them for autumn arrangements. If you are looking for a reliable long-term plant, go for Oriental poppies. These hardy perennials easily handle frosts and will reliably return to your flower bed year after year. Most annual poppies prefer cooler weather at the start of the season and a sunny spot with well-draining soil.
