Mullein

Mullein is a striking yet very undemanding plant that brings the atmosphere of a sun-drenched landscape to any garden. It grows naturally on sunny slopes and in dry areas, which gives it great resilience. In flower beds, it forms a beautiful vertical element, and its flowers are a huge attraction for bees and bumblebees. It thrives best in full sun in well-drained, rather sandy soil with a lower nutrient content. It is crucial to avoid heavy and waterlogged soils, as mulleins do not tolerate winter dampness well. They are a great choice for natural-style plantings and steppe-like areas, where they nicely complement delicate drought-tolerant grasses. Even though they are often short-lived perennials, they like to keep themselves going through self-seeding in the right spot. Some species can also be used as cut flowers for bouquets. If you are considering growing these plants directly from seeds, our guide on how to sow will help you.

Black Mullein, Loukykvět

Verbascum nigrum var. album

Dark mullein is a native perennial and a popular medicinal herb that will bring a piece of unbridled nature into your garden. Its natural home is found on sunny slopes, embankments, and roadsides, which is why it thrives best in our gardens in full sun, in well-drained and rather sandy soil. It can handle longer periods of drought and easily survives frosts down to minus twenty-three degrees. It forms a neat basal rosette of dark green leaves, from which sturdy stems over a meter tall emerge in May and June. While the original wild species blooms yellow, this exceptional var. album form boasts pure white flowers cleverly decorated with purple and finely hairy stamens. These flowers act literally as a magnet for bees and other beneficial pollinators. Although it is a short-lived perennial, if it likes it at your place, it will reliably take care of new seedlings and grow in the same spot in the following years. In a flowerbed, it perfectly complements drought-tolerant grasses and fits beautifully into naturally styled plantings. You can also confidently cut the sturdy, tall flower stems for a vase, where they will look stunning for several days, and they serve as an unconventional element in summer bouquets. Mullein does not require any complicated care, and generally does not suffer from pests or diseases, so even complete beginners can grow it without any trouble.

Mullein Sixteen Candles, Loukykvět

Verbascum chaixii

Mullein is a native European perennial that brings a piece of wild nature's magic to gardens. In the wild, you will most often find it growing on sunny, rocky hillsides and drier grassy spots, where it withstands a lack of water well. Thanks to this origin, it is a very undemanding plant, whose cultivation even a complete beginner can easily manage. In the garden, it will do best in full sun in well-drained and rather sandy soil, where it will not suffer from waterlogging. It produces striking, over a meter tall stems full of vibrant flowers, bringing necessary height and firm structure to mixed perennial beds. Even though it is classified among short-lived perennials, it grows reliably in a sunny spot and seamlessly handles frosts below minus twenty degrees. During May and June, the thick stems are covered with a flood of bright yellow flowers. For bees, bumblebees, and plenty of other beneficial pollinators, mullein is a huge attraction and a rich source of food. If you enjoy making bouquets from your own garden, you will certainly appreciate that it is perfectly suited for cutting into summer vases, where it brings a bit of meadow relaxation. In addition, you can let the faded, sturdy stems dry and use them for winter decorations or other floral creations. The 'Sixteen Candles' cultivar stands out with a beautiful detail in the form of striking, purple-fuzzed stamens that decorate the center of each flower. These form an interesting contrast to the green to gray-green felted leaves. You will receive an already nicely grown seedling from us, which you can simply transplant into your bed and immediately watch how it thrives.

Mullein Dark Eyes, Loukykvět
New

Verbascum hybrida

Mullein Dark Eyes is a charming perennial that brings the softness of pastel tones to your garden. Native mullein species originate from dry and sunny regions, where they naturally grow on poor and stony soils. Thanks to this origin, this garden beauty is exceptionally low-maintenance and copes perfectly in well-draining, sandy soil with minimal moisture. It forms compact rosettes of gray-green leaves, from which sturdy stems grow from May to July, reaching a height of around thirty to forty centimeters. In the garden, this short-lived perennial is excellent for steppe beds, gravel gardens, or mixed plantings with drought-tolerant grasses. It also enlivens its surroundings by being a great attraction for bees, bumblebees, and other beneficial pollinators. The Dark Eyes cultivar catches the eye at first glance with an unusual color combination. Its flowers glow with creamy and pastel yellow shades, hiding a striking dark eye in their center. It is perfectly suited for cutting, so you can bring a piece of summer mood home into a vase. On the other hand, it is not suitable for drying into permanent arrangements; they offer the most beauty when fresh. A small and pleasant surprise is the fact that the flowers are edible, so you can use them to decorate summer salads or sweet desserts in an unconventional and very effective way. You will receive a strong and vital seedling, which you simply transplant to a sunny location. The reward will be persistent flowering and the joy of growing without unnecessary worries.
