Black Mullein

Dark mullein (Verbascum nigrum) fits perfectly into naturalistic gardens and modern prairie-style plantings. It pairs exceptionally well with drought-tolerant ornamental grasses (e.g., Stipa, Festuca), Lavender, catmint, wood sage, or stonecrops. Simply put, it beautifully complements any other plants that love full sun and thrive in drier, well-drained soil.

The plant is completely safe and is not toxic to humans or pets. You can grow it without any worries in gardens frequented by children, dogs, or cats. Furthermore, its flowers are classified as edible, and the plant itself is a traditional and popular medicinal herb.

Dark mullein (Verbascum nigrum) loves the sun, so plant it in the sunniest and warmest spot possible. Ideal soil is permeable, light, and preferably sandy or gravelly. In heavy, clay, and waterlogged soil, the plant's roots would easily rot. When planting in a flower bed, maintain a recommended spacing of roughly 40 cm apart, which corresponds to an ideal density of 5 to 7 plants per square meter.

Due to its overall height and, above all, its deep taproot, mullein is clearly better suited for growing in open garden soil. If you still decide to try growing it on a patio, you will need to choose a very large and deep container with a substantial drainage layer and sandy soil.

This exceptional variety, var. album, usually blooms during May and June. Unlike the common wild yellow mullein, it boasts pure white flowers, the centers of which are sophisticatedly decorated with purple and finely hairy stamens. The flowers cover the sturdy, tall stems quite densely.

A short-lived perennial usually lives in the garden bed for only a few years, sometimes even acting as a biennial. However, you definitely don't have to say goodbye to it! Dark mullein (Verbascum nigrum) has the excellent quality of readily self-seeding in a suitable location. It will reliably provide you with new healthy seedlings and natural generational turnover in your garden without any further help from you.

If you leave the dried stems with faded seed heads standing in the flowerbed through the winter, they will create a beautiful vertical structure that stands out fantastically, especially under a layer of morning frost or light snow. Furthermore, these dry seeds serve as a welcome source of food for overwintering birds.

Definitely! The sturdy, tall stems covered in white flowers are highly suitable for cutting. They will look beautiful in a vase for several days, acting as a lovely, slightly wild, and unique element in summer bouquets. However, unfortunately, these flowers are not suitable for drying.

Mullein is a great joy for gardeners because it is exceptionally hardy and low-maintenance. It does not suffer from any common diseases, and its leaves or flowers do not attract typical garden pests. You do not need to apply any preventative sprays, making it truly easy to grow even for a complete beginner.

Standard division of clumps is not at all ideal for mullein. The plant develops a very deep and strong taproot, and disturbing its root ball could cause irreversible damage. The best way to propagate it is to let nature do the work for you and wait for it to self-seed in the garden. Once ripe, you can also carefully collect the seeds and intentionally scatter them in new locations.
