Aby vám šater Snowflake dělal na zahradě radost dlouhá léta, dopřejte mu podmínky, které připomínají jeho domovinu na slunných stepích. Klíčem k úspěchu je suchá, propustná a spíše vápenitá půda. Vyhněte se místům, kde se drží voda nebo kde je půda kyselá. Rostlinu vysazujte na plné slunce, stín by způsobil vytahování stonků a slabé kvetení. Protože obdržíte již zapěstovanou sazenici, manipulace je jednoduchá. Vykopejte jámu o něco větší, než je kořenový bal, a pokud je půda těžší, promíchejte ji s pískem. Dodržujte dostatečné rozestupy (spon cca 70 cm), aby kolem rostliny proudil vzduch, což je nejlepší prevence proti případným problémům, ačkoli je tato odrůda zdravá a škůdci ji prakticky nenapadají.
Zálivka a výživa jsou u šateru specifické tím, že méně znamená více. Po výsadbě sazenici zalévejte pravidelně, dokud se neuchytí, ale dospělá rostlina má raději sucho. Dlouhodobé mokro je pro ni nebezpečné, zejména v zimě. Co se týče hnojení, vyhněte se hnojivům s vysokým obsahem dusíku, která by podpořila růst listů na úkor květů. Bohatě postačí na jaře přidat trochu kompostu nebo hnojiva pro trvalky, ideálně s obsahem vápníku. Rostlina je dlouhověká a na jednom místě vydrží mnoho let, aniž by vyžadovala přesazování nebo dělení trsů, což je vzhledem k jejímu kůlovitému kořenu stejně obtížné.
Péče o rostlinu během roku zahrnuje především práci s nůžkami. V létě, kdy se rostlina promění v bílý oblak drobných květů, můžete stonky řezat do vázy, kde tvoří nádhernou výplň kytic. Květy jsou skvělé i k sušení – v tom případě je řežte těsně před plným rozvitím a sušte zavěšené květenstvím dolů ve stínu. Pokud rostlinu neřežete do vázy, odstraňování odkvetlých částí může rostlinu stimulovat k menšímu opakovanému kvetení. Celkový řez rostliny nechte až na jaro; suché nadzemní části chrání kořenový krček během zimy, přestože je rostlina vysoce mrazuvzdorná a odolná až do extrémních -34 °C.
Často se ptáte, zda lze šater pěstovat i v truhlíku či květináči na balkoně. Odpověď je ano, ale s několika podmínkami. Protože jde o rostlinu, která tvoří mohutné trsy a má hluboké kořeny, malé truhlíky nejsou vhodné. Zvolte velkou, a hlavně hlubokou nádobu (ideálně terakotovou pro lepší odpařování vody) a na dno dejte silnou vrstvu keramzitu. Substrát smíchejte s pískem v poměru 1:1. Počítejte s tím, že v nádobě substrát rychleji promrzá, takže i když je rostlina mrazuvzdorná, květináč je vhodné na zimu obalit jutou nebo polystyrenem, nebo jej zapustit do záhonu.
