In all likelihood, they will not be identical. Columbines cross-breed very readily among themselves (if you have other varieties nearby), and even the offspring of a single plant can be variable. You may get different shades of pink, single flowers instead of double ones, or changes in the shape of the spurs. It is a bit of a garden surprise.

Yes, columbine is a poisonous plant. It contains toxic substances in all parts, especially in the seeds and roots. If ingested, it can cause nausea, vomiting, and heart problems. The sap from the plant can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. We recommend planting it out of the reach of small children who like to taste things, and using gloves when handling it.

Columbine is not demanding, but it will be most beautiful in humus-rich, permeable, and slightly moist soil. It does not like:

• Heavy clay soils where water stands (roots could rot).
• Extremely dry sandy soils (here it would need frequent watering).

The white coating is usually powdery mildew (a fungal disease), which appears in dry and warm weather after flowering. Yellowing is a natural process of leaf aging in summer. The best solution is to cut the entire plant back to about 5–10 cm above the ground, water it, and fertilize. The plant will soon shoot new, healthy leaves that will decorate the flowerbed until autumn.

Columbines typically bloom at the turn of spring and summer, i.e., in May and June. If you plant a strong seedling in the spring, it may bloom the same year. If the seedling is smaller, you can expect full flowering in the following season after it has established roots.

This is the work of leaf miner larvae. It is a very common pest of columbines that eats tunnels inside the leaves. Although it does not look nice, it is usually not fatal for a mature plant. You can pick off and dispose of the affected leaves (do not put them in the compost) to limit the spread.

After planting, keep the soil constantly slightly moist until the plant roots properly (approx. the first 2–3 weeks). Mature columbines are relatively hardy, but in hot summers they appreciate regular watering so their leaves do not dry out. However, be careful of waterlogging.

Thanks to their structure, they add lightness and airiness to bouquets. Cut them when the first flowers on the stem are open and the others are still in the bud stage.

Columbines are considered short-lived perennials; one plant usually lives for 3–4 years. However, thanks to their ability to self-seed, they often remain in the flowerbed 'forever,' as old plants are gradually replaced by new seedlings. Therefore, you do not have to worry about them disappearing from the flowerbed.

It depends on your intention:

1. If you do not want it to self-seed: Cut off the spent stems immediately once the flowers fade. This will also strengthen the plant.
2. If you want new plants: Let the flowers ripen into seed heads. The seeds will sow themselves into the surroundings.
3. Aesthetic pruning: If the leaves do not look nice after flowering (turning yellow or spotted), you can cut the entire plant back to the ground. It usually sprouts fresh green leaves again.

Common columbine (Aquilegia vulgaris) is a fully frost-hardy perennial that overwinters without problems in our conditions. It requires no special winter protection. In autumn, the plant dies back (the above-ground part dies off) and sprouts again in the spring.
