Lady's mantle (Alchemilla mollis) Irish Silk is one of the least demanding perennials you can get for your garden. Since you will receive an already grown seedling, you can plant it practically anytime during the growing season, provided the soil is not frozen. Choose a location in full sun or partial shade for planting. The plant is very tolerant, but it will thrive best in loamy, humous, and permeable soil that can retain moisture. If you place it in full sun, make sure the soil doesn't dry out too much, whereas in partial shade it will need slightly less watering.
When planting in a flower bed, maintain a spacing of approximately 40 cm between individual plants, which corresponds to roughly 5 to 7 pieces per square meter. Thanks to its growth, Lady's mantle will quickly fill in and act as an excellent ground cover element that suppresses weed growth. It requires moderate watering; ideally, the substrate should be consistently slightly moist, but not waterlogged for long periods. Regarding fertilization, regular perennial fertilizer or working compost into the soil in the spring will suffice. A great advantage of this plant is its absolute resistance to pests and diseases, so no complex spraying or protective measures await you.
The key intervention to maintain a beautiful appearance is pruning. After the main blooming period (during the summer), do not be afraid to cut the plant back. If you remove the faded stems and older leaves, the plant will sprout again with fresh, velvety leaves and often bloom a second time. This cut will also prevent unwanted self-seeding into the surroundings, as Lady's mantle likes to self-seed. No special protection is needed for the winter; the plant is fully frost-resistant down to -34 °C (zone 4a). In the spring, simply remove the dry leaf remains from the previous season, and the plant will reliably sprout again.
If you do not have a garden, you can successfully grow Lady's mantle in containers or window boxes. Thanks to its compact growth (30–50 cm), it is perfectly suited for them. In a container, however, it is necessary to monitor watering more carefully, because the root ball tends to dry out faster than in open soil. Provide a pot with a drainage hole and put a drainage layer at the bottom so the roots don't sit in water. The plant is frost-resistant even in containers, but during very severe black frosts, it is advisable to wrap the container in jute so that the entire root system does not freeze.
