The cultivar Caradonna stands out with a long flowering period and dark, almost black-purple stems with tiny purple flowers and dark purple bracts. If we cut it back after flowering, it will bloom again in late August and September.

Šalvěj hajní 'Caradonna' je trvalka, která doslova miluje slunce a teplo, proto pro ni na zahradě vyberte to nejslunnější stanoviště. Původem ze stepních oblastí je zvyklá na chudší a sušší podmínky, což z ní činí ideální rostlinu pro moderní suchomilné výsadby nebo štěrkové záhony. Půda by měla být především dokonale propustná, spíše písčitá nebo kamenitá. Těžká a mokrá jílovitá zemina jí nesvědčí a může způsobovat uhnívání kořenů, zejména v zimním období. Pokud máte na zahradě těžší půdu, je nezbytné ji před výsadbou vylehčit pískem nebo drobným štěrkem. Tato šalvěj se tradičně vysazuje jako doprovod růží, se kterými sdílí podobné nároky na slunce, ale skvěle vypadá i v kombinaci s okrasnými travami, kde vyniknou její vzpřímené tmavé stonky.
Jelikož obdržíte již zapěstované silné sazenice, je výsadba velmi snadná a můžete ji provádět po celou sezónu, pokud není půda zamrzlá. Rostliny sázíme do sponu přibližně 35 cm, což odpovídá zhruba 8 až 9 rostlinám na metr čtvereční, aby se časem vytvořil zapojený porost. Po výsadbě je nutné rostlinu důkladně zalít, aby dobře zakořenila, ale jakmile se uchytí, je na zálivku velmi nenáročná a dobře zvládá i delší období sucha. 'Caradonna' je také výbornou volbou pro pěstování v nádobách či truhlících na slunných terasách. V takovém případě však musíte zajistit perfektní odtok vody – na dno květináče dejte vrstvu keramzitu a použijte substrát smíchaný s pískem, aby nedocházelo k přemokření.
Jedním z nejdůležitějších úkonů při pěstování této šalvěje je letní zpětný řez. Po prvním hlavním kvetení, které probíhá od května do července, se doporučuje celý trs sestřihnout zhruba o polovinu až dvě třetiny. Nemusíte se bát, rostlina velmi rychle znovu obrazí a odmění se vám druhou vlnou květů na přelomu srpna a září. Tento řez navíc podpoří kompaktní a hustý růst, takže se trsy nebudou rozvalovat. Květy jsou nejen krásné na pohled, ale i jedlé a aromatické, navíc přitahují velké množství včel a motýlů. Díky pevným stonkům se hodí i k řezu do vázy, kde vydrží svěží až jeden týden.
Z hlediska odolnosti je šalvěj 'Caradonna' naprostým šampionem. Je plně mrazuvzdorná až do -28 °C (zóna 5a), takže naši zimu zvládá bez nutnosti speciální ochrany či zakrývání, pokud nestojí v podmáčené půdě. Netrpí běžnými chorobami a škůdci se jí většinou vyhýbají. Jedinou výjimkou mohou být čerstvé jarní výhonky, na kterých si občas rádi pochutnají slimáci, proto je na jaře dobré rostliny zkontrolovat. Hnojení není u této skromné trvalky příliš nutné; nadbytek živin by mohl vést k bujnému růstu listů na úkor květů a k poléhání stonků. Bohatě jí stačí trocha kompostu na jaře.

Its homeland is the semi-desert regions of North America, so it loves sun, heat, and a drier, well-drained substrate. It grows as a low, densely branched subshrub that is easy to shape and maintain. The Summer Breeze variety is popular for its strong and healthy growth as well as its exceptionally generous set of flowers, which grow to about one meter. If you like to create your own bouquets, do not hesitate to cut gaura for a vase. Harvesting is best done the moment the first small flowers on the stem begin to open.
