Šalvěj Joy přináší do výsadeb přesně to, co má ve svém názvu – radost z neúnavného kvetení, které trvá od pozdního jara až do podzimu. Tento polokeřovitý druh se od klasických bylinných šalvějí liší dřevnatějící bází a vyžaduje specifické podmínky napodobující jeho domovinu v jihozápadní části Severní Ameriky. Pro úspěšné pěstování je klíčová výborná drenáž, protože rostlina nesnáší zimní přemokření, a proto se jí skvěle daří ve štěrkových záhonech nebo v nádobách s kvalitním odtokem vody. Odrůda Joy vás okouzlí jemným odstínem světle růžových květů, které působí velmi něžně a vzdušně. Listy jsou drobné, tuhé a při promnutí intenzivně voní, čímž zpříjemní každé posezení v jejich blízkosti. Rostlina dorůstá výšky kolem 40 až 60 centimetrů a tvoří kompaktní keříky, které je vhodné na jaře sestřihnout pro udržení hustého tvaru. Přestože není určena k řezu do vázy, její hodnota spočívá v dlouhodobém vizuálním efektu a schopnosti přilákat do zahrady užitečný hmyz.

Šalvěj Joy si zamilujete pro její vzdušný vzhled a nenáročnost, pokud jí dopřejete podmínky imitující její domovinu. Klíčem k úspěchu je slunce a sucho. Sazenice vysazujte na ta nejteplejší místa v zahradě, kde se opírá slunce po většinu dne. Půda nesmí být humózní ani těžká; naopak, tato šalvěj miluje chudší, kamenité a písčité podloží.
Tato šalvěj je skvělou volbou pro pěstování v nádobách na terasách a balkonech. Vyberte dostatečně velký květináč s drenážním otvorem a použijte substrát pro bylinky smíchaný s perlitem nebo pískem. Rostlina v nádobě bude vyžadovat o něco častější zálivku než ve volné půdě, ale vždy platí pravidlo: raději nechat proschnout než přelít. Hnojení není pro její prosperitu nezbytné, ale slabá dávka hnojiva na jaře podpoří vitalitu listů i násadu světle růžových květů. Díky tomu, že je rostlina bez škůdců a chorob, se nemusíte obávat složité chemické ochrany a můžete se těšit z přítomnosti včel a motýlů, které květy přitahují.
Aby vám šalvěj dělala radost co nejdéle, je důležitý jarní řez. Vzhledem k tomu, že se jedná o polokeř s dřevnatějící bází, zkracujeme loňské výhony až v době, kdy pomine nebezpečí silných mrazů (březen/duben), na výšku cca 10–15 cm nad zemí nebo na živé dřevo. Tím podpoříte hustý růst a bohaté kvetení, které trvá od pozdního jara až do podzimu. Během léta je rostlina prakticky bezúdržbová, pouze občasné zaštípnutí odkvetlých vrcholků podpoří tvorbu nových květů. Její listy příjemně voní a jsou jedlé, takže se nemusíte bát vysadit ji ani v blízkosti posezení nebo dětského koutku.
Co se týče zimování, buďte opatrní. Ačkoliv rostlina snese mráz až k -12 °C, v našich podmínkách jí často více škodí kombinace vlhka a chladu než samotný mráz. Pěstujete-li ji na záhoně, na zimu k bázi rostliny přihrňte štěrk nebo kamínky (nikoliv kůru, která drží vlhkost) a přikryjte ji chvojím. V chladnějších oblastech je bezpečnější pěstovat ji jako přenosnou rostlinu v květináči a na zimu ji schovat do chladného, světlého prostoru, kde teplota neklesá pod bod mrazu. Tím si zajistíte, že se s touto nádhernou trvalkou setkáte i v další sezóně.

Spanish sage
Šalvěj úzkolistá je fascinující trvalka původem z jihozápadu USA a Mexika, která na první pohled klame tělem. Svými úzkými, jehlicovitými listy připomíná spíše okrasnou trávu než klasickou šalvěj, což jí v angličtině vysloužilo název travní šalvěj. Tato unikátní textura vnáší do záhonů lehkost a pohyb, protože se rostlina nádherně vlní i v mírném vánku. Její pravá chvíle přichází v druhé polovině léta a na podzim, kdy se vrcholky stonků obalí drobnými, ale intenzivně zbarvenými květy. Jde o rostlinu stvořenou pro slunná a suchá stanoviště, která by jiným druhům dělala potíže. Výborně prospívá v chudých, štěrkových a dobře propustných půdách, kde jí nehrozí uhnívání kořenů.

Salvia greggii, často nazývaná šalvěj podzimní, je v případě kultivaru Dancing Dolls neúnavným vytrvalcem, který vaše zahradní nádoby ozdobí květy od pozdního jara až do zámrazu. Její domovinou jsou polopouštní oblasti Severní Ameriky, proto miluje slunce, teplo a sušší, propustný substrát. Roste jako nízký, hustě větvený polokeř, který se snadno tvaruje a udržuje. Ačkoliv je pěstování nenáročné a vhodné i pro začátečníky, je třeba myslet na její limitovanou mrazuvzdornost. Šalvěj muškátová je skutečnou královnou mezi bylinami, která svou impozantní výškou a omamnou vůní dominuje každému slunnému záhonu. Původně pochází z oblasti Středomoří a Střední Asie, kde obývá suché stráně a kamenitá místa, proto jí i u vás na zahradě bude nejlépe v propustné, chudší půdě na plném slunci. Vytváří mohutné přízemní růžice velkých, plstnatých listů, ze kterých vyrůstají silné a vzpřímené lodyhy dorůstající až do výšky 120 cm. Květenství je složeno z drobných kvítků, ale hlavní okrasou jsou výrazné, fialově až růžově zbarvené listeny, které rostlinu zdobí dlouhé týdny od června do srpna. Celá rostlina je silně aromatická a její kořenitá vůně připomínající muškátové víno láká do zahrady velké množství včel a čmeláků. Gaura is a clump-forming perennial native to Texas and Louisiana. Here, it behaves more like a short-lived perennial. This species of sage originally comes from the steppe regions of Central and Eastern Europe. It forms profusely flowering small clumps with straight upright stems. In flower beds, it looks best in groups. Traditionally, due to the identical flowering time, it is planted as a companion to roses. However, it will look just as good in mixed drought-loving steppe plantings with grasses. It lasts 7 days in a vase. The cultivar Caradonna stands out with a long flowering period and dark, almost black-purple stems with tiny purple flowers and dark purple bracts. If we cut it back after flowering, it will bloom again in late August and September.
