Melinis Karoo Queen

It is not fully hardy in our climate. Its hardiness rating is Zone 8a (withstanding temperatures from -9.4 °C to a maximum of -12.2 °C). It is therefore most commonly grown as an attractive annual. If you wish to keep it, we recommend growing it in containers and moving the plant to a sheltered, bright, and dry space over the winter, where the temperature does not drop below -12 °C.

This plant is not among the poisonous species. Growing it is completely safe both in households with small children and with pets, such as dogs or cats. It does not contain any dangerous toxic substances for them.

At maturity, it reaches a height of between 30 and 60 cm. Thanks to its compact growth, it is absolutely ideal for growing in containers, troughs, and larger planters on terraces, where its airy appearance will beautifully complement other drought-tolerant plants.

Melinis Karoo Queen is not an aromatic plant. You will not detect any scent after rubbing its grey-green leaves or dusty pink flowers. It is grown primarily for its unique aesthetic, finely fuzzy appearance, and wonderful color contrast, rather than for its fragrance.

The plant blooms profusely in late summer and autumn, specifically from July to October. You can look forward to beautiful feathery plumes in shades ranging from dusty pink to red. Together with the grey-green leaves, they form a very elegant contrast.

As a short-lived perennial, it only lasts for a few years in its natural habitat. In our climatic conditions, however, it is limited by winter frosts. If you do not move it indoors for the winter to temperatures above -12 °C, it behaves like a typical annual here. An advantage is that it does not self-seed uncontrollably, so it won't take over surrounding flower beds.

We have great news! Melinis Karoo Queen is very hardy and does not suffer from any common pests or diseases. If you provide the right conditions, such as sun and dry, well-draining soil, it will thrive without the need for chemical sprays.

These symptoms almost always point to excess moisture or poor drainage. You are likely overwatering the plant or it lacks proper drainage. We recommend the following: • Keep watering to a minimum. • Check if the container has drainage holes at the bottom. • Alternatively, transplant the plant into leaner, more permeable soil mixed with sand.

Given its requirements, it is best combined with other drought-tolerant perennials and annuals that love the sun. It will look great next to Lavender, sedums, sages, or silver-leaved plants such as lamb's ear or dusty miller. It will beautifully soften any modern or prairie-style flower bed.

Melinis originates from the dry regions of Africa, which is why it loves full sun. Choose the sunniest and warmest spot in your garden, on your terrace, or balcony. In the shade, the plant would struggle, flower poorly, and lose its compact shape.

Absolutely! Its feathery pink spikelets are excellent for cutting into fresh summer and autumn bouquets, to which they add a sense of lightness. It is also great for drying. The flowers retain their structure after drying and perfectly complement winter decorations and dried arrangements.

This charming grass originates from the dry and rocky regions of southern Africa. Thanks to its appearance, which resembles ruby feathers, it is often called Ruby Grass in English. Its Latin genus name Melinis refers to a honey-like tint, although the plant itself does not have a scent. It beautifully captures the atmosphere of the hot African savanna.
