Umístění a nároky na pěstování
Tato elegantní tráva je ideální volbou pro začínající zahradníky, protože její nároky jsou minimální a úspěch při pěstování je téměř zaručen. Pěchava vápnomilná miluje slunce, ale na rozdíl od mnoha jiných trav skvěle prosperuje i v polostínu, kde krásně vynikne její dvojbarevný efekt listů. Základem úspěchu je správná půda, která musí být především propustná. Rostlině se daří v zemině, která je písčitá, hlinitá s příměsí kamení nebo štěrková. Důležité je, aby se v místě výsadby nedržela voda, protože přemokření je pro tuto suchomilnou rostlinu větším nepřítelem než mráz. Díky své skromnosti nevyžaduje téměř žádné hnojení; naopak, v příliš výživné půdě by mohla ztrácet svůj kompaktní tvar a poléhat. Dodanou sazenici stačí zasadit do úrovně terénu a ze začátku ji udržovat mírně vlhkou, dokud pořádně nezakoření.
Řez a celoroční údržba
Jednou z největších předností pěchavy je její zimní efekt a brzké jarní probouzení. Protože je v našich podmínkách často stálezelená nebo polo-stálezelená, na podzim se do ní vůbec nezasahuje. Suchá květenství a listy tvoří v zahradě krásnou strukturu i během zimních měsíců. Teprve v předjaří, obvykle v březnu, věnujte rostlině chvilku péče. Není nutné provádět radikální zpětný řez až u země jako u ozdobnic. Často postačí trs pouze „vyčesat“ prsty a odstranit tak suché a poškozené listy, aby uvolnily místo novým výhonkům. Pokud je trs po tuhé zimě nevzhledný, můžete jej sestřihnout na výšku asi pět až deset centimetrů. Kvetení nastupuje velmi brzy, už v dubnu, a odkvetlé klásky můžete na rostlině ponechat pro ozdobu, nebo je ostříhat a použít do suchých vazeb.
Pěstování v nádobách a květináčích
Pěchava je díky svému nízkému vzrůstu (20–30 cm) a kompaktnímu tvaru naprosto ideální rostlinou pro pěstování v nádobách na terasách či balkonech. Při sázení do květináče je absolutně nezbytné zajistit dokonalý odtok vody, aby kořeny nestály v bahně. Na dno nádoby nasypte dostatečnou vrstvu drenáže z kamínků nebo keramzitu. Substrát by měl být lehký a propustný, ideálně smíchaný s hrubším pískem v poměru jedna ku jedné. Zatímco ve volné půdě si pěchava po zakořenění vodu obvykle najde sama, v květináči je závislá na vás. Zalévejte ji pravidelně, ale vždy až poté, co vrchní vrstva substrátu proschne. I v nádobě je rostlina mrazuvzdorná, ale jelikož má kořeny méně chráněné než v záhonu, je vhodné nádobu na zimu postavit na chráněné místo k vnější zdi a případně ji obalit izolačním materiálem.

The Czech cultivar 'Pálava' is valuable for its extra-long flowering time from July to October. Unlike other cultivars, its flowers are sterile and do not create any seedlings.
