Cultivation
Při výběru stanoviště pro pěchavu dlouhostébelnou myslete na její původ ze slunných skalnatých strání. Této okrasné trávě se bude nejlépe dařit na plném slunci nebo v mírném polostínu, kde se její dvoubarevné listy krásně vybarví. Zásadním faktorem pro úspěch je kvalita půdy, která musí být především výborně propustná. Rostlina nesnáší trvalé zamokření, zejména v zimním období, kdy by kořeny mohly uhnívat. Ideální je zemina hlinitá s příměsí písku, štěrkovitá nebo kamenitá. Pokud máte na zahradě těžkou jílovitou půdu, doporučujeme při výsadbě na dno jamky nasypat vrstvu drenáže ze štěrku a zeminu vylehčit pískem, aby voda mohla volně odtékat.
Protože pěchava vytváří pěkné husté trsy, doporučujeme dodržovat spon přibližně 40 cm, což vychází na 6 až 9 rostlin na metr čtvereční. Jakmile se pěchava na stanovišti usadí, stává se velmi odolnou vůči suchu a vyžaduje jen minimální přísun vody, což z ní dělá ideální volbu pro zahrádkáře, kteří nemohou zalévat každý den.
Péče během roku je u této trvalky minimální, jelikož netrpí na žádné choroby ani škůdce. Protože jde o stálezelenou nebo polo-stálezelenou trávu, nestříhejte ji na podzim, ale nechte trs přes zimu tak, jak je. Teprve velmi brzy na jaře, ideálně už koncem února nebo začátkem března, ještě před rašením nových stébel, odstraňte suché a poškozené listy nebo proveďte zpětný řez. Tím podpoříte růst nových, zdravých listů a brzké kvetení. Hnojení není nutné, rostlina si vystačí s živinami v běžné zahradní zemině; přehnojené rostliny mohou být méně pevné a náchylnější k poléhání.
Pěchavu dlouhostébelnou můžete s úspěchem pěstovat i v nádobách či truhlících na balkonech a terasách. Při pěstování v květináči je naprosto klíčová drenážní vrstva a otvor pro odtok vody na dně nádoby, aby nedocházelo k přemokření. Použijte substrát pro okrasné trávy nebo běžný zahradnický substrát smíchaný s pískem či perlitem. Mějte na paměti, že rostliny v nádobách jsou náchylnější na promrznutí kořenového balu než ty ve volné půdě. Ačkoli je pěchava plně mrazuvzdorná až do téměř -29 °C, v nádobě je vhodné ji v případě silných holomrazů obalit netkanou textilií nebo bublinkovou fólií, nebo nádobu umístit na chráněné místo u zdi domu.

Tufted hairgrass is an undemanding native grass that remains green even in winter. In nature, it grows in meadows and forest clearings. It forms a neat clump of leaves, from which grow delicate thin stems with transparent clouds of flowers. It adapts even to more difficult conditions, such as dry shade or compacted soil, and can handle waterlogging too. The Czech cultivar 'Pálava' is valuable for its extra-long flowering time from July to October. Unlike other cultivars, its flowers are sterile and do not create any seedlings. It is stated that it resists drought best of all tufted hairgrasses.
