Cosmos are popular among growers for their low maintenance and rapid growth, and the Cupcakes Blush variety with its cup-shaped flowers is no exception. Although starting indoors is possible, with this annual we often recommend direct sowing right into the bed as soon as the danger of frost has passed, ideally during May and June. Sow the seeds shallowly and only lightly cover with substrate, because they need contact with the soil and moisture to germinate, which takes just 4–8 days at a temperature of 18–22 °C. If you do decide to start them indoors to speed up flowering, do not start too early. Cosmos grow like weeds and would suffer in the seed tray for a long time. Sowing 2 to 4 weeks before the planned planting out, i.e., no earlier than April, is perfectly sufficient. Place 1–2 seeds into each cell of the seed tray.
Regarding location, these beauties are modest; a sunny spot and rather poorer, well-draining soil suits them. In overly fertilized soil, the plants would be lush with greenery but would bloom little. Plant or thin out the seedlings to a spacing of 20–30 cm. Given the height of the plants, which ranges between 60 and 120 cm, we definitely recommend providing support so the stems do not break under the influence of wind or rain. This can be a growing net or tying to stakes or twine around the perimeter of the bed. A key step to achieving bushy and stable plants is pinching. Don't be afraid to pinch out the top of a young plant; this will encourage branching and the setting of a much larger number of flowers.
For use in bouquets, 'Cupcakes Blush' is absolutely excellent. To keep it looking great in a vase for as long as possible (usually 5–7 days), ideally harvest the stems in the morning. The right moment to cut is when the bud is just starting to open, but the petals are not yet fully unfurled, or when the flower's center is still tightly closed (unopened). Do not forget about deadheading – the regular removal of faded flowers. Cosmos functions like a flower-making machine; the more you cut it, the more new buds it will set right up until the first frosts.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
