Cosmos Rosetta

Cosmos 'Rosetta' is an annual and is not frost-hardy at all (its limit is 0 °C). Therefore, its annual life cycle ends completely with the first autumn frosts. You can safely pull it out in the autumn and add it to the compost; the plant cannot be protected for the winter in any way.

This common problem for gardeners usually has two main causes:

Soil that is too nutrient-rich (over-fertilized): As mentioned, Cosmos requires very poor soil. If you heavily fertilized the flowerbed in the spring or used compost full of nitrogen, the plant will grow to massive proportions, but it will only produce green foliage and somehow 'forget' to flower.

Lack of light: If you planted it in partial shade or shade, the plant will struggle and will not set enough buds. Simply put, it needs direct sunlight.

Sow the seeds into shallow holes and don't forget to cover them gently with soil, which is very important for proper germination. Always place 1 to 2 seeds into one hole. We recommend maintaining a spacing of 20–30 cm so that the more robust adult plants have enough living space. The ideal temperature for germination is 18–22 °C, and the whole process is so easy that even a complete beginner can handle it with ease.

Cosmos grow at lightning speed, making them perfect for direct sowing into garden beds, ideally from May to July after the last frosts have passed.

If you want to start them indoors in a seed tray, you only need to begin in April or May, no more than 2 to 4 weeks before the planned outdoor planting (never earlier than 5 weeks before the last frost). If you sow them too early, the seedlings will quickly overgrow and run out of space in the seed tray. Always transplant them outdoors only after the last spring frosts.

Cosmos seeds germinate very quickly, which will delight even the least patient gardeners. If you maintain an ideal germination temperature of around 18–22 °C, you will see the first green sprouts on the soil surface in as little as 4 to 8 days.

Absolutely! Cosmos 'Rosetta', with its large, open flower structure (resembling a daisy), is a literal magnet for insects. During the long flowering months from June to October, bees, bumblebees, and beautiful butterflies are constantly visiting it.

By planting Cosmos, you will naturally support biodiversity and attract beneficial pollinators to your garden.

Unfortunately not; the flowers of Cosmos are so delicate and fragile that they are not at all suitable for drying. After drying, their petals would fall off very quickly and lose their charming pink color completely. So, enjoy them to the fullest in the flowerbed or freshly cut in a vase instead.

You have absolutely nothing to worry about! Cosmos is not at all poisonous to dogs, cats, poultry, or curious children. You can safely grow it in any part of your home garden.

Yes, you have a keen eye! Cosmos flowers are fully edible. Although they have almost no distinct taste (the plant is not aromatic and does not smell), thanks to their beautiful light pink shade, they work as a wonderful summer decoration.

They are great for sprinkling over fresh salads, as a garnish for light cakes, or you can try freezing them directly into ice cubes for spectacular summer cocktails.

Cosmos have an excellent ability for self-seeding. If you leave the last few flowers on the stems to fade and dry out in the autumn, the seeds will spill into the bed on their own, and new plants will sprout in the same spot next spring.

You can, of course, easily collect the dried seeds (which look like small dark needles) yourself into a paper bag and store them in a dry place for targeted spring sowing.

The 'Rosetta' Cosmos comes from the hot, sunny plains of America, so it absolutely needs full sun in your garden. Without a proper dose of sunlight, it will not bloom as profusely.

As for the soil, it thrives best in well-draining and lean soil. Definitely avoid heavy clay and waterlogged soils. Cosmos are very modest and do not require any special peat-based substrates.

Definitely yes! The 'Rosetta' Cosmos is truly made for cutting. Its 7 cm large, pastel pink flowers look absolutely fantastic in a vase. A huge advantage is the rule: the more flowers you cut, the more the plant will produce. From a single healthy plant, you will gradually get at least 12 strong stems for your vase throughout the summer.

Growing them is usually completely trouble-free, but you may be surprised by these unwelcome guests:

Aphids: Sometimes they appear on fragile young shoots and flower buds. You can wash them off with water or use a gentle soap spray.

Slugs and snails: Unfortunately, they find tiny young seedlings very tasty. Keep a close eye on the plants, especially after spring rain.

Powdery mildew: This fungal disease forms a white, powdery coating on the leaves. It usually occurs at the end of the summer due to poor air circulation and the alternation of wet and warm weather.
