The flowers also spread a very pleasant and unmistakable fragrance into their surroundings. In the garden, prairie dropseed stands out best when planted in a sunny spot in groups of multiple plants accompanied by other drought-tolerant perennials, with which it will create an impressive steppe scenery. The seedlings do not require any complicated care, they easily handle frosts down to minus twenty-eight degrees, and do not suffer from any diseases or pests. Gaura is a charming clump-forming perennial whose original homeland is the sunny plains of Texas and Louisiana. In the garden, it will appreciate exactly the conditions it is used to from nature, meaning full sun and well-drained, even poorer and sandy soil. A sturdy clump that grows to a height of around eighty centimeters will grow from the seedling you receive. It belongs among the very undemanding plants for beginners, which are completely avoided by diseases and pests. Although it behaves more like a short-lived perennial here, it willingly self-seeds in a suitable location. The tiny little flowers colored in pure white and light pink shades resemble small butterflies and bloom tirelessly from June all the way to October. It adds extraordinary lightness and airiness to flower beds, making it combine beautifully with ornamental grasses. Opadavec je dlouhověká a bezúdržbová tráva, která si zaslouží čestné místo na plném slunci. Pro výsadbu zvolte stanoviště, kde se voda nedrží, protože rostlina vyžaduje dobře propustnou, hlinitou až písčitou půdu. Těžké a jílovité půdy je nutné vylepšit drenážní vrstvou štěrku nebo příměsí písku, aby kořeny neuhnily. Sazenice sázejte do sponu 40–50 cm (přibližně 4 až 6 rostlin na metr čtvereční), což jim zajistí dostatek prostoru i cirkulaci vzduchu. Po výsadbě rostliny důkladně zalijte, ale jakmile zakoření, stává se opadavec velmi odolným vůči suchu díky svému hlubokému kořenovému systému.
Tato okrasná tráva je ideální volbou pro začátečníky, protože netrpí na žádné choroby ani škůdce a nevyžaduje složité hnojení; stačí jí běžná zahradní zemina. Mějte však na paměti, že opadavec roste pomaleji a chvíli trvá, než trs doroste do své finální velikosti a krásy, proto buďte v prvních letech trpěliví. Velkou výhodou je jeho vysoká mrazuvzdornost až do -28 °C. Na podzim listy nestříhejte, jejich zlatavé zbarvení a zaschlá květenství budou zdobit zahradu i pod sněhem a zároveň chrání trs před mrazem. Zpětný řez provádějte až brzy na jaře, kdy odstraníte celou nadzemní část nízko nad zemí, aby uvolnila místo novým zeleným výhonům.
Pokud plánujete pěstování opadavce v nádobě či truhlíku, je to možné, ale musíte mu zajistit specifické podmínky. Vzhledem k hlubokým kořenům zvolte dostatečně vysoký a objemný květináč s otvorem pro odtok vody. Na dno nádoby vždy umístěte drenážní vrstvu z keramzitu nebo kamínků. Rostliny v nádobách jsou náchylnější na vysychání než ve volné půdě, proto je během horkého léta pravidelně kontrolujte a mírně zalévejte, přestože jde o suchomilný druh.
