The tickseed seedling requires no complicated care after planting, making it a perfect plant even for gardening beginners. The key to success is choosing a sufficiently hot and sunny place for it right from the start, where this perennial feels absolutely its best. The ideal soil should be loamy and very well-draining; the plant can brilliantly handle even poorer and dry soils. It will not thrive in heavy and waterlogged soils, so it is a good idea to add a little sand or fine gravel when planting to improve drainage. Place individual seedlings at a distance of about 30 to 40 centimeters from each other. Thanks to such spacing, each small bush will get space for free growth, and at the same time, a compact planting will be created that will soon attract the attention of beneficial pollinators with its flowers.
In the summer months, caring for tickseed is exceptionally easy. After rooting well, the plant handles even longer periods of drought excellently and only needs occasional watering. A huge advantage of this perennial is its excellent health; the plant does not suffer from usual plant diseases, and various garden pests avoid it entirely. You can very easily encourage abundant blooming by regularly removing old faded flowers. This way, the plant will not unnecessarily invest energy in seed production, but will focus on producing new creamy-yellow buds. This pastel beauty is also perfectly suited for cutting and as an edible decoration even in summer salads.
The tickseed handles the winter period in a suitably chosen location without the slightest difficulties. The plant is fully frost-resistant and tolerates even severe frosts dropping to -23 °C. The only thing that can threaten its overwintering is the mentioned winter wetness, where roots sit in water and can subsequently rot. If you resort to a complete cutback for aesthetic or cultivation reasons, always schedule it for the beginning of autumn at the latest, so the plant has time to strengthen before winter. To be more certain, you can heap dry leaves around the plants in autumn and place a layer of evergreen boughs over it, which works as excellent insulating protection against freezing wind.
Tickseed 'Moonbeam' is also an absolutely great choice for container growing if you want to beautify a balcony or terrace with it. For successful growing in planter boxes, follow a few basic rules:
Drainage holes: The pot must always have drainage holes at the bottom.
Light substrate: Choose humous soil mixed with perlite for maximum permeability.
Wintering: Hide potted plants in a frost-free, cool room before frosts.
Minimal watering: During winter, water only so that the substrate does not completely dry to dust. This way, you are guaranteed to enjoy tickseed in a pot in future seasons as well.
