Ideally, plant the Coreopsis 'Zagreb' seedling in full sun. Before the actual planting, it is good to thoroughly drench the seedling along with its original packaging with water so that the root ball becomes saturated and establishes itself much better after transplanting. Choose hot, sunny places in the garden where the plant will thrive best and reward you with a rich flood of tiny golden flowers. Choosing the right soil is very important for successful growing. It should be loamy and very well-drained, because the plant handles drier conditions excellently, but on the contrary, it cannot stand waterlogging, especially in winter. When planting in a flowerbed, observe a spacing of 30 to 40 centimeters, which corresponds to roughly seven to nine plants per square meter. This chosen distance will ensure the plants have enough space to form dense and compact bushes that will not need any additional support.
During the season, caring for Coreopsis is very easy, making it a perfect choice for complete beginners. The plant reliably resists all common pests and diseases, so you can do completely without any chemical sprays and save yourself a lot of worries. It only requires moderate watering; once well rooted, it playfully handles longer periods of summer drought, so only water when the soil on the surface visibly dries out. Fertilizing doesn't need to be overdone; it is enough to add a little high-quality aged compost around the plant in the spring, which will provide the necessary nutrients for the entire season. If you want to keep the plant in full bloom for as long as possible, i.e., from June to September, we recommend continuously removing faded flowers. Furthermore, Coreopsis attracts bees and other beneficial pollinators, so your garden will literally come alive thanks to it.
Although it is primarily a short-lived perennial, you can significantly extend its lifespan in the garden by choosing a drier and warmer location for it. This species is very frost-hardy and easily handles even very severe frosts, as it can withstand temperatures down to -40 °C. The only real risk is the aforementioned winter waterlogging of the roots, which can cause rot. Therefore, as a preventive step against excessive winter moisture and potential black frosts, you can lightly protect the plants in the autumn by covering them with a layer of spruce branches.
Coreopsis 'Zagreb' can also be easily grown in containers and larger planters on balconies or sunny terraces. If you opt for this variant, remember that the pot must have a sufficiently large drainage hole at the bottom and a proper drainage layer of gravel or expanded clay, so that excess water after watering or rain can always drain away quickly. For planting, use a high-quality perennial substrate, which we recommend lightening with sand. In the confined space of a container, the substrate dries out faster than in open soil, so carefully adjust watering to the current weather and do not let the plant suffer from thirst for long. For winter, it is ideal to hide the pots in a frost-free but cool room and water really only very carefully, or to thoroughly insulate the container outside.
