Gaura Whirling Butterflies

Gaura is undemanding regarding nutrients. Over-fertilized soil harms it – the plant then forms a lot of leaves, the stems are soft, flop over, and bloom little. It is quite sufficient if you work a small amount of mature compost into the soil around the plant in spring or use a slow-release fertilizer with lower nitrogen content.

In our conditions, Gaura is often a short-lived perennial, but it can survive the winter. The crucial rules are:

• Never cut the plant in autumn! Hollow stems would suck in water and frost would tear apart the root crown.
• Leave dry stems over winter as natural protection.
• Mound a layer of dry leaves or brushwood around the roots.
• Ensure it does not stand in water in winter (drainage).

The cultivar name translates to 'Whirling Butterflies'. This is because the flowers have four petals arranged in a way that resembles butterfly wings. They are on thin, flexible stems that move in even the gentlest breeze. The whole bush then looks as if it were covered with a flock of fluttering white butterflies.

Yes, if you bought seedlings early in spring and they were grown in a greenhouse, it is advisable to harden them off. Before permanent planting, take them outside to a protected place during the day for a week and bring them inside at night. This prevents cold shock or leaf scorch from the harsh spring sun.

This plant is relatively healthy. The biggest enemy is not insects, but root rot caused by wet soil. If the plant is in too much shade or dampness, it may suffer from powdery mildew or rust (brown spots on leaves). Pests such as aphids may exceptionally appear, sucking on young shoots – these can be rinsed off with a stream of water or use a soapy solution.

Yes, it is an excellent plant for floristry that adds lightness to bouquets. Harvest stems the moment the first 2 to 3 florets open. They last several days in a vase and further buds will gradually bloom. It is ideal to cut stems early in the morning when they are full of water.

The key to success is perfect drainage. Gaura does not tolerate heavy, clay, and waterlogged soils – it rots in them during winter. Prepare the soil as follows:

• Deeply loosen the soil.
• If you have heavier soil, mix in a large amount of sand or fine gravel.
• Do not add manure or heavy composts; Gaura prefers rather poorer and well-draining soil.

The main pruning is done only in spring (usually in April), when there is no longer a risk of severe frosts. Cut the entire clump low above the ground (approx. 5–10 cm). The plant will then quickly sprout new shoots. During the summer, you can remove spent stems to encourage the formation of new buds, but with the 'Whirling Butterflies' cultivar, this is not strictly necessary as it is relatively self-cleaning.

Proceed as follows when planting:

1. Soak the seedling including the pot in water before planting so the root ball absorbs moisture.
2. Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball.
3. You can put a layer of gravel at the bottom of the hole as drainage.
4. Plant the plant so that it is at the same depth as in the pot (do not bury it too deep, do not leave it sticking out).
5. Cover with soil, press down gently, and water.

Botanically, Gaura is a short-lived perennial. This means the mother plant may start to weaken or die after 3–4 years (especially after a hard winter). However, if it thrives in its location, it often self-sows. In spring, you may find small seedlings around the original plant that will replace the older ones.

Gaura lindheimeri is not considered a toxic plant. It is safe for dogs, cats, and horses. You therefore do not have to worry about planting it in a garden where pets or children move about.

Do not rush to plant Gaura (Gaura lindheimeri) seedlings. Since it comes from warmer regions (Texas, Louisiana), it is advisable to wait until spring frosts have passed, i.e., ideally after mid-May (after the 'Ice Saints'). If planting in autumn, do so by early October at the latest so they have time to root well before winter arrives.

This plant is a sun lover. For abundant flowering and compact growth, choose a location in full sun. In shade, the plant will be leggy, stems will flop, and it will bloom very little. A place protected from strong wind is also important, although the flexible stems can withstand a mild breeze.

After planting, water regularly until the plant roots (approx. the first month). Once Gaura is established, it is very drought tolerant. It has a long taproot that reaches deep for moisture. In maturity, water it only during very prolonged heatwaves. Excessive watering is more harmful than drought.
