Phlomis Tuberosa
This Phlomis grows wild in Central and Southeastern Europe; here it is among the critically endangered species. The stems are purple and bear rough, heart-shaped leaves. The flowers are pink-purple; the dry capsules with seeds are also decorative. It creates a distinct decorative element even in winter. Particularly impressive is the combination with soft, loose plantings of grasses and perennials, into which Phlomis introduces a strict graphic accent.

Catmints are ideal companions for roses, suitable for naturalistic gardens, and lower species also for boxes and pots. Some of them are an irresistible attraction for cats, caused by the hallucinogen nepetalactone. This should be present in the highest amount in the species Nepeta cataria. Conversely, lemon-scented catmints reportedly do not attract cats. The botanical name Nepeta likely comes from the name of the ancient Etruscan city Nepet - Nepi in the territory of today's Italian province of Viterbo, where the plant was once cultivated. Nepeta racemosa naturally grows on dry meadows and rocky, stony slopes from the Caucasus to Central Asia. It has aromatic grey-green leaves and forms a tufted semi-spherical bush. Walker’s Low got its name after an Irish estate where it was bred in 1970. It has the most intense blue-violet flower coloration.

Papaver orientale
Oriental Poppy Royal Wedding
The Oriental poppy originates from the Caucasus, Turkey, and Iran, where it grows on rocky slopes and dry meadows. It blooms with large bowl-shaped flowers on tall stems. Like all poppies, for use in bouquets, we harvest them as soon as the buds color up and "crack". Additionally, we briefly (for about 20 seconds) sear the ends of the stems with a flame and immediately place them in cold water. Then they last in a vase for 4 days. The strikingly hairy and large leaves die back shortly after flowering, and the plant must rest until spring to gather strength. A portion of the leaves sprouts again in late summer. Therefore, it is advisable to plant other perennials in close proximity that sprout later and can draw attention to themselves during the poppy's pause. Royal Wedding flowers have white petals with a dark burgundy spot in the center of the flower.

Cultivation
Tato statná trvalka bezpodmínečně vyžaduje plné slunce a teplé místo, kde se jí bude nejlépe dařit. Co se týče půdy, sápa není příliš vybíravá, ale zásadní je, aby zemina byla propustná a hlinitá. Nesnáší totiž zimní přemokření, které by mohlo způsobit uhnívání jejích hlíznatých kořenů. Pokud máte na zahradě těžkou jílovitou půdu, doporučujeme při výsadbě na dno jámy přidat drenážní vrstvu ze štěrku. Sazenice sázejte do sponu přibližně 50 cm, aby měly v dospělosti dostatek prostoru pro cirkulaci vzduchu a vynikla jejich majestátní silueta. Po výsadbě rostlinu zalijte, aby se kořeny spojily s okolní půdou, ale v dalších týdnech a letech již bude zálivka minimální – sápa sucho vysloveně miluje.
Pěstování sápy je vděčnou záležitostí i pro úplné začátečníky, protože rostlina netrpí na žádné specifické škůdce ani choroby. Je však dobré vědět, že po vysazení může trvat jeden až dva roky, než se na novém místě plně adaptuje a předvede své patrovité květenství v plné kráse. V prvním roce často vytvoří jen hustý koberec zelených listů, který funguje jako skvělý pokryv půdy. Pokud by se rostlina časem příliš rozrůstala do šířky, lze ji snadno omezit kořenovými zábranami. Co se týče zimní údržby, doporučujeme suché stonky na podzim nestříhat. Nejenže jsou pevné a mrazuvzdorné až do -28 °C, ale jejich siluety vypadají v zimní zahradě pod čepicí sněhu naprosto kouzelně. Řez proveďte až brzy na jaře, rostlina poté rychle a bujně znovu obrazí.
Často se nás ptáte na pěstování sápy v nádobách. Ačkoliv jde o velkou rostlinu dorůstající výšky 80–120 cm, pěstování v květináči je možné, pokud zvolíte dostatečně velkou a hlubokou nádobu. Květináč by měl mít na dně kvalitní drenáž a otvory pro odtok vody, protože v nádobě je riziko přemokření vyšší než ve volné půdě. Použijte substrát pro středomořské rostliny nebo směs zahradní zeminy s pískem. Mějte na paměti, že v nádobě může rostlina vyžadovat častější kontrolu vláhy než na záhoně, ale stále platí pravidlo: raději sušší než přemokřené. Díky své odolnosti a atraktivnímu vzhledu se stane dominantou slunných teras či balkonů.

This species of sage originally comes from the steppe regions of Central and Eastern Europe. It forms profusely flowering small clumps with straight upright stems. In flower beds, it looks best in groups. Traditionally, due to the identical flowering time, it is planted as a companion to roses. However, it will look just as good in mixed drought-loving steppe plantings with grasses. It lasts 7 days in a vase. The cultivar Caradonna stands out with a long flowering period and dark, almost black-purple stems with tiny purple flowers and dark purple bracts. If we cut it back after flowering, it will bloom again in late August and September.
