The original species comes from the shrubby and forest edges of East Asia, which is why a location in the sun or partial shade suits it well here too. It will thrive in loamy and humus-rich soil with regular watering. An interesting feature of this clematis is its variable growth. If you provide it with support in the form of a fence or trellis, it will willingly climb up to a height of two and a half meters. However, if you leave it to grow freely without support, it grows like a carpet and forms a dense shrub. You will receive a grown seedling in a pot from us, which you can simply transplant straight into the garden. Care is easy, it doesn't suffer from diseases or pests, and even beginners can easily manage it. Moreover, these enchanting flowers reliably attract pollinators from far and wide. It is typical for Oriental poppies that their strikingly fuzzy green leaves die back soon after flowering. You will receive Clematis 'Mrs R. Brydon' as a healthy and grown seedling in a pot, which you can transplant directly into a pre-prepared flowerbed upon delivery. The ideal location should be partially shaded, but it will also tolerate full sun well, provided it has plenty of moisture available. The soil should be sufficiently humous and loamy to naturally retain the necessary moisture, but at the same time, it must not be permanently waterlogged and heavy. During planting itself, it is necessary to maintain a spacing of around 80 cm, which in practice means roughly 1 to 2 plants per square meter. This generous space will reliably ensure sufficient air circulation and provide the plant with the necessary room for its very vigorous and dynamic growth throughout the entire growing season.
At the beginning of spring, you can support the plant by adding a layer of well-matured compost. The method of cultivation is purely up to your decision – if you offer it no support, it will gradually form a very dense, carpet-flowering shrub. But if you provide it with a sturdy trellis or fence, it will willingly climb up them to a respectable height of over two meters. This perennial is an absolutely ideal choice for gardening beginners, because it is exceptionally resilient and does not suffer from any common pests or diseases. Its beautiful lavender-blue flowers decorate the garden, but also attract useful pollinators, and you can even cut them as an unconventional decoration for a vase.
The overall care for this Asian clematis is exceptionally undemanding and truly anyone can handle it. In the spring, a cutback is performed, the plant then quickly regrows and flowers abundantly. In the winter months, you don't have to worry about it at all, because it is extremely frost-hardy down to an incredible -34 °C and will easily survive a Central European winter without any special protection. If you are considering growing it in a container on a terrace or a spacious balcony, definitely choose a large and deep enough pot with a functional drainage hole and do not forget much more frequent watering.
