Cultivation
Prairie mallow will arrive to you as a beautifully rooted and grown seedling in a pot, which you can plant straight into the perennial flowerbed. Choosing the right location is absolutely crucial for successful cultivation. This plant loves full sun and literally enjoys a hot sunny spot, where its beauty fully stands out. The soil should be above all well-drained, but at the same time humus-rich and rather loamy. Definitely avoid heavy and permanently wet soils. When planting, remember the following rules:
Plant the seedlings at a distance of roughly 40 centimeters from each other.
This spacing corresponds to 5 to 7 plants per square meter.
Sufficient space is important for good air circulation. Prairie mallow usually does not have problems with pests, but in too dense a stand or dampness, it can suffer from a fungal disease called rust. Flowing air acts as the best prevention.
During the growing season, prairie mallow requires medium watering. This means that we keep the soil moderately moist, but let it dry out slightly between waterings. Completely avoid waterlogging, which does not suit the plant. If you have a rather dry garden, a layer of mulch will help retain moisture at the roots. In the spring, support the plant by adding mature compost. You can also confidently grow prairie mallow in a spacious container on a terrace. In that case, do not forget a thick drainage layer and drainage holes. Plants in containers require more frequent checking of watering and more regular fertilizing, because nutrients are washed out of the substrate more quickly.
From July to September, you can look forward to a flood of burgundy-red flowers on sturdy stems that grow up to one meter high. The stems are naturally stable and do not need any support. The flowers are a great attraction for bees and are excellent for cutting into summer bouquets. To prolong the blooming period, we recommend regularly removing faded shoots. Prairie mallow is indeed a short-lived perennial, but it excels in extreme frost resistance. It will easily handle even very harsh winters with temperatures dropping down to -28 °C. Before winter or early in the spring, simply cut the dead stems just above the ground so that the plant has room for new growth.

Perovskia are sparsely branched subshrubs, originating from areas ranging from Afghanistan to Tibet. They grow in open, sunny, rocky, and stony habitats. Their white-felted shoots and grayish aromatic leaves are striking. They fit well in sunny flower beds with other drought-loving perennials, where they create interesting structures even in the winter months. Little Spire is a smaller cultivar suitable even for pots with a soil volume of 7 liters or more.

This species of sage originates from the steppe regions of Central and Eastern Europe. It forms abundantly flowering small clumps with straight upright stems. In beds, it looks best in groups. Traditionally, it is planted as a companion to roses due to the matching flowering time. However, it will look equally good in mixed drought-loving steppe plantings with grasses. It is an excellent food source for bees. It lasts 7 days in a vase. Schneehügel blooms white.
