The Oriental poppy originates from the Caucasus, Turkey, and Iran, where it grows on rocky slopes and dry meadows. It blooms with large bowl-shaped flowers on tall stems. Like all poppies, for use in bouquets, we harvest them as soon as the buds color up and "crack". Additionally, we briefly (for about 20 seconds) sear the ends of the stems with a flame and immediately place them in cold water. Then they last in a vase for 4 days. The strikingly hairy and large leaves die back shortly after flowering, and the plant must rest until spring to gather strength. A portion of the leaves sprouts again in late summer. Therefore, it is advisable to plant other perennials in close proximity that sprout later and can draw attention to themselves during the poppy's pause. Royal Wedding flowers have white petals with a dark burgundy spot in the center of the flower.

Cultivation
Řetězovka viržinská je robustní a nenáročná trvalka. Nejlépe se jí daří v půdách bohatých na živiny, které jsou schopné dobře zadržet vláhu. Nebojte se ji vysadit ani do těžší jílovité půdy, kterou zvládá s přehledem. Stanoviště volte primárně slunné, kde pokvete nejbohatěji, ale snese i polostín. V přílišném stínu se však může vytahovat za světlem a stonky mohou mít tendenci poléhat. Při výsadbě dodržujte rozestupy alespoň 50 cm, protože rostlina tvoří bujné trsy, které se časem rozšiřují do šířky.
Vzhledem k tomu, že řetězovka přirozeně roste na vlhčích stanovištích, je klíčové zajistit jí dostatek vody – suchá a písčitá stanoviště pro ni nejsou vhodná. Pokud ji plánujete pěstovat v květináči na terase, je to možné, ale připravte se na nutnost velmi časté zálivky. V nádobách substrát vysychá mnohem rychleji než ve volné půdě a řetězovka na sucho reaguje vadnutím listů. Pro pěstování v nádobách použijte výživný substrát ideálně smíchaný s trochou jílu nebo hydrogelu pro lepší retenci vody.
Jednou z velkých výhod této rostliny je její obrovská vitalita a odolnost. Prakticky netrpí chorobami a škůdci se jí vyhýbají, což z ní činí ideální rostlinu pro ekologické a bezúdržbové zahrady. Má však přirozenou tendenci se šířit podzemními oddenky do okolí, takže pokud ji chcete udržet na přesně vymezeném místě, je vhodné při výsadbě použít kořenovou zábranu (například zapuštěný plastový lem). Pokud se trs rozroste příliš, stačí na jaře nebo na podzim rýčem jednoduše odseknout okrajové části. Tímto způsobem rostlinu snadno zmladíte a získané oddělky můžete darovat nebo vysadit na jiné vlhké místo v zahradě.
Kvetení probíhá v pozdním létě, od srpna až do října, čímž řetězovka oživí zahradu v době, kdy mnoho jiných letních trvalek již odkvétá. Její květy jsou navíc jedlé, takže je můžete bez obav použít jako netradiční ozdobu salátů nebo dezertů. Na zimu není třeba rostlinu nijak zvlášť chránit, je extrémně mrazuvzdorná i v našich nejchladnějších oblastech. Suché stonky doporučujeme ponechat na záhoně přes celou zimu – nejenže chrání střed rostliny (srdíčko), ale ojíněné či zasněžené vypadají v zimní zahradě velmi dekorativně a poskytují úkryt drobnému hmyzu. Jarní úklid záhonu pak spočívá v jednoduchém sestřižení všech nadzemních částí těsně nad zemí ještě před rašením nových lístků.
