Nepeta racemosa
Catmint Walker’s Low
Catmints are ideal companions for roses, suitable for naturalistic gardens, and lower species also for boxes and pots. Some of them are an irresistible attraction for cats, caused by the hallucinogen nepetalactone. This should be present in the highest amount in the species Nepeta cataria. Conversely, lemon-scented catmints reportedly do not attract cats. The botanical name Nepeta likely comes from the name of the ancient Etruscan city Nepet - Nepi in the territory of today's Italian province of Viterbo, where the plant was once cultivated. Nepeta racemosa naturally grows on dry meadows and rocky, stony slopes from the Caucasus to Central Asia. It has aromatic grey-green leaves and forms a tufted semi-spherical bush. Walker’s Low got its name after an Irish estate where it was bred in 1970. It has the most intense blue-violet flower coloration.

Gaura is a clump-forming perennial native to Texas and Louisiana. Here, it behaves more like a short-lived perennial. Tiny flowers resembling small butterflies bloom tirelessly from June until the first frosts. For bouquets, harvest as soon as the first two or three flowers open on the stem. The Obedient plant is a native plant of the eastern regions of North America, where it grows on river banks and wet meadows. It forms upright, bushy clumps that spread to the surroundings via root runners. The flowers have the shape of a slender spike with four rows of tubular flowers and resemble Snapdragon flowers. We harvest as soon as the first flowers in the inflorescence open; they continue to bloom in the vase. In a bouquet, they are a suitable accompaniment for Dahlias and last 10–14 days in a vase. Interesting, and usable for drying too, are the spent spikes with seeds. Obedient plant Rosea has light pink flowers and spreads well.

Plesnivka nejlépe poroste na slunném, teplém a sušším místě v zahradě, ideálně na plně osluněných jižních svazích. Zásadní je pro ni správná půda, která by měla být chudá na živiny, velmi dobře propustná, nejlépe písčitá až kamenitá. Těžkým jílovitým zeminám se vyhněte, protože v nich by kořeny mohly v zimě zahnívat. Při výsadbě dodržujte spon zhruba 30 centimetrů od sebe, což odpovídá přibližně 9 až 11 rostlinám na metr čtvereční. Takto zvolená vzdálenost zajistí dostatečnou cirkulaci vzduchu, díky čemuž rostliny lépe osychají a zůstávají vitální.
Co se týče zálivky, jedná se o velmi nenáročnou trvalku, která si po zakořenění skvěle poradí se suchem. Zalévejte ji proto jen mírně a v obdobích dlouhých veder; přemokření jí vyloženě škodí. Hnojení není vůbec potřeba, jelikož v na živiny chudých půdách si lépe zachovává svůj kompaktní tvar o výšce 30 až 50 centimetrů. Plesnivka se dá s velkým úspěchem pěstovat i v nádobách či truhlíkách na slunných terasách. Pokud se pro tuto variantu rozhodnete, dodržujte tato pravidla:
- Na dno květináče nasypte štěrk nebo keramzit pro silnou drenážní vrstvu.
- Použijte lehký substrát s vysokým podílem písku.
- V nádobě zalévejte až ve chvíli, kdy substrát zcela vyschne.
Během léta nevyžaduje žádnou speciální údržbu a nepotřebuje ani oporu, protože její stonky jsou pevné a stabilní. Velkou výhodou pro každého pěstitele je, že netrpí žádnými chorobami a spolehlivě se jí vyhýbají i běžní škůdci, takže odpadá jakékoliv ošetřování postřiky. Jelikož s příchodem zimy ztrácí nadzemní část, doporučujeme na podzim nebo brzy na jaře suché výhony seříznout těsně nad zemí, aby měla prostor pro nový růst. Trvalka je plně mrazuvzdorná až do -23 °C a zimu na záhonu přečká bez nutnosti jakékoliv speciální ochrany. Květináče však raději přesuňte na chráněné místo k vnější zdi domu.

Rudbeckia, also known as coneflowers, originates from North America; they are robust and abundantly blooming perennials of late summer and autumn. They are suitable for prairie plantings with tall grasses as well as for cottage gardens. The central disks look very effective even after flowering and decorate perennial beds throughout the winter. Harvest for the vase as soon as they bloom. Vase life is 7 to 10 days. We can also use the dry central disks. Goldsturm is a reliable and long-proven cultivar. It has bright golden-yellow flowers with dark centers.

This species of sage originally comes from the steppe regions of Central and Eastern Europe. It forms profusely flowering small clumps with straight upright stems. In flower beds, it looks best in groups. Traditionally, due to the identical flowering time, it is planted as a companion to roses. However, it will look just as good in mixed drought-loving steppe plantings with grasses. It lasts 7 days in a vase. The cultivar Caradonna stands out with a long flowering period and dark, almost black-purple stems with tiny purple flowers and dark purple bracts. If we cut it back after flowering, it will bloom again in late August and September.
