Slézovník k vám dorazí jako krásně prokořeněná a vzrostlá sazenice v květináči, kterou můžete rovnou vysadit na trvalkový záhon. Pro úspěšné pěstování je naprosto klíčový výběr správného stanoviště. Tato rostlina miluje plné slunce a doslova si užívá horké slunné místo, kde plně vynikne její krása. Půda by měla být především propustná, ale zároveň humózní a spíše hlinitá. Těžkým a trvale mokrým půdám se určitě vyhněte. Při výsadbě pamatujte na následující pravidla:
- Sazenice sázejte na vzdálenost zhruba 40 centimetrů od sebe.
- Tento spon odpovídá 5 až 7 rostlinám na metr čtvereční.
- Dostatečný prostor je důležitý pro dobrou cirkulaci vzduchu. Slézovník nemívá problémy se škůdci, ale v příliš hustém porostu nebo vlhku může trpět na houbovou chorobu zvanou rez. Proudící vzduch funguje jako nejlepší prevence.
Během vegetační sezóny vyžaduje slézovník střední zálivku. Znamená to, že půdu udržujeme přiměřeně vlhkou, ale mezi zaléváním ji necháme mírně proschnout. Zcela se vyhněte přemokření, které rostlině nesvědčí. Pokud máte spíše suchou zahradu, pomůže vrstva mulče, která udrží vláhu u kořenů. Na jaře rostlinu podpořte přidáním vyzrálého kompostu. Slézovník můžete bez obav pěstovat také v prostorné nádobě na terase. V takovém případě nezapomeňte na silnou drenážní vrstvu a odtokové otvory. Rostliny v nádobách vyžadují častější kontrolu zálivky a pravidelnější přihnojování, protože živiny se ze substrátu rychleji vyplavují.
Od července do září se můžete těšit na záplavu vínově červených květů na pevných stoncích, které dorůstají výšky až jednoho metru. Stonky jsou přirozeně stabilní a nepotřebují žádnou oporu. Květy jsou skvělým lákadlem pro včely a výborně se hodí k řezu do letních kytic. Pro prodloužení doby kvetení doporučujeme pravidelně odstraňovat odkvetlé výhony. Slézovník je sice krátkověká trvalka, ale vyniká extrémní mrazuvzdorností. Bez problémů zvládne i velmi tuhé zimy s teplotami klesajícími až k -28 °C. Před zimou nebo brzy na jaře stačí odumřelé stonky jednoduše seříznout těsně nad zemí, aby měla rostlina prostor pro nový růst.

This species of sage originally comes from the steppe regions of Central and Eastern Europe. It forms profusely flowering small clumps with straight upright stems. In flower beds, it looks best in groups. Traditionally, due to the identical flowering time, it is planted as a companion to roses. However, it will look just as good in mixed drought-loving steppe plantings with grasses. It lasts 7 days in a vase. The cultivar Caradonna stands out with a long flowering period and dark, almost black-purple stems with tiny purple flowers and dark purple bracts. If we cut it back after flowering, it will bloom again in late August and September.
