The Oriental poppy originates from the Caucasus, Turkey, and Iran, where it grows on rocky slopes and dry meadows. It blooms with large bowl-shaped flowers on tall stems. Like all poppies, for use in bouquets, we harvest them as soon as the buds color up and "crack". Additionally, we briefly (for about 20 seconds) sear the ends of the stems with a flame and immediately place them in cold water. Then they last in a vase for 4 days. The strikingly hairy and large leaves die back shortly after flowering, and the plant must rest until spring to gather strength. A portion of the leaves sprouts again in late summer. Therefore, it is advisable to plant other perennials in close proximity that sprout later and can draw attention to themselves during the poppy's pause. Royal Wedding flowers have white petals with a dark burgundy spot in the center of the flower.

Sléz pižmový je ideální rostlinou pro slunná stanoviště, kde se mu bude dařit nejlépe, ačkoliv snese i lehký polostín. Jakmile obdržíte sazenice, vysaďte je do dobře propustné půdy, která může být i chudší na živiny; příliš humózní nebo přehnojená zemina by způsobila, že rostlina bude vytáhlá a může poléhat. Při výsadbě dodržujte spon přibližně 35 až 45 cm, což odpovídá zhruba 5 až 7 rostlinám na metr čtvereční. Tento rozestup je důležitý nejen pro estetický dojem, ale také pro zajištění dostatečné cirkulace vzduchu, která pomáhá předcházet houbovým chorobám, jako je rez slézová, na kterou může být tento druh náchylný. Po výsadbě sazenice důkladně zalijte, aby se kořenový systém mohl v novém prostředí rychle uchytit.
Během vegetační sezóny je péče o sléz poměrně nenáročná a nezabere vám mnoho času. Rostlina nevyžaduje pravidelné přihnojování, naopak jí svědčí spíše chudší podmínky. Co se týče zálivky, jakmile rostlina zakoření, poradí si i s krátkodobým suchem, ale v horkých letních dnech jí dopřejte vláhu. Klíčovým momentem údržby je řez po prvním hlavním kvetení. Po prvním odkvětu rostlinu seřízneme, krásně zhoustne, vytvoří nové listy a znovu nakvete, čímž si prodloužíte radost z květů až do podzimu. Květy jsou navíc jedlé a skvěle se hodí jako dekorace do letních salátů nebo dezertů. Pokud se rozhodnete pěstovat sléz v nádobě, vybírejte květináč s odtokovými otvory a na dno dejte drenážní vrstvu, protože rostlina nesnáší přemokření. V nádobách bude vyžadovat častější kontrolu vlhkosti substrátu než ve volné půdě.
Sléz pižmový je sice krátkověká trvalka, což znamená, že mateřská rostlina po několika letech odumírá, ale na stanovišti se spolehlivě udržuje díky schopnosti samovýsevu. Pokud chcete, aby se rostlina na záhonu množila sama, nechte na konci sezóny několik květních stvolů dozrát a vysemenit. V opačném případě na podzim odstraňte odumřelé části rostliny. Z hlediska mrazuvzdornosti je sléz velice odolný, snese teploty až k -29 °C (zóna 5a), takže nepotřebuje žádnou speciální zimní ochranu ani nastýlku. Díky své odolnosti a nenáročnosti je vděčnou trvalkou, která při minimální péči přináší do zahrady romantický nádech a láká velké množství užitečných opylovačů.

Calamint
An undemanding and modest perennial that blooms with a large number of tiny flowers. It blooms for a record-breaking length of time throughout late summer and autumn. It forms smaller, compact, airy bushes that release a minty-spicy scent. The thyme-like flowers attract bees, bumblebees, and butterflies. It will look good among roses as well as in naturalistic steppe beds, perhaps with lower grasses. This calamint is generally more vigorous. It differs from other calamints with felted leaves by its record flowering length, stiff and shiny leaves, and also a larger number of flowers that do not form seeds and are therefore maximally durable. Sometimes sold under the cultivar name 'Triumphator'.
