Cultivation
We will deliver Clematis Praecox to you as an already healthy and well-rooted seedling, which you can plant straight into your garden. The ideal location should be pleasantly partially shaded, but the plant will also tolerate full hot sun very well, as long as you regularly provide it with enough moisture. The soil should be well-draining, loamy, and sufficiently humous. Since this exceptional clematis does not climb on vertical support, but sprawls prostrately to a respectable width of 1.5 to 2.5 meters, follow the recommended spacing of roughly 80 cm when planting. Thanks to this distance, each seedling will have plenty of space for healthy and strong growth. It will then very soon create a dense and vital living carpet that perfectly covers unsightly empty spots in the flowerbeds.
After planting and subsequently during the warmer summer months, ensure regular, but definitely not excessive watering. Ideally, the soil should always be slightly moist, but by no means permanently waterlogged. This clematis also thrives excellently in spacious planters or voluminous pots, provided you follow a few basic and very simple rules:
Choice of container: Always choose a sufficiently large and deep pot with bottom drainage holes.
Drainage: Pour a coarser layer of expanded clay or gravel onto the bottom for easier and faster drainage of excess water.
Regular watering: In cultivation containers, the substrate dries out disproportionately faster, so check the soil moisture much more often than in a standard garden bed.
This beautiful and long-lived perennial is exceptionally undemanding and even absolute beginners will easily handle growing it, because absolutely no common pests or fungal diseases bother it. However, the absolutely essential and most important maintenance for it is the spring cutback. At the beginning of each spring, cut last year's shoots low above the ground; the plant will then very quickly sprout with new strong stems and flower abundantly at the end of summer. For winter, the clematis does not need any special protection or covering, as it is fully frost-hardy down to an incredible -34 °C. Just bear in mind that, like most representatives of this species, it is poisonous if ingested, which you should certainly take into account when choosing the final planting location.
