Its natural homeland is the North American prairies, where it grows in open sunny areas with nutritious and well-drained humous soil. Exactly such conditions will be ideal for it in your garden as well. We send customers grown seedlings directly in pots, which take root quickly after being transplanted into the ground and soon form vigorous clumps of narrow green leaves.
Caring for this perennial is truly undemanding, and beginner gardeners can embark on it without worry. The plant grows to a height of sixty to ninety centimeters, has stable stems that do not require support, is avoided by diseases, and excels in reliable frost resistance, as it can withstand temperatures down to minus thirty-four degrees. The only unwanted visitor can be the field vole, which is sometimes attracted to its tubers. From mid-summer to early autumn, you can look forward to blooming, which makes the plant a living magnet for bees, bumblebees, and butterflies. The cultivar Royal Wedding will reward you in May and June with huge bowl-shaped flowers with pure white petals, which hide a distinct dark burgundy spot in their center. Moreover, these enchanting flowers reliably attract pollinators from far and wide. It is typical for Oriental poppies that their strikingly fuzzy green leaves die back soon after flowering. The plant takes a break over the warmest summer to gather strength, and a smaller portion of the leaves often sprouts again only at the end of summer. Therefore, it is ideal to plant the poppy in the flower bed in close proximity to other perennials that sprout slightly later and naturally fill the empty space left by the resting poppy. It avoids diseases and needs no support, reaching a height of around sixty to eighty centimeters. Just watch out for field voles, which might develop a taste for its fleshy roots. Some of them are an irresistible attraction for cats, caused by the hallucinogen nepetalactone. This should be present in the highest amount in the species Nepeta cataria. Conversely, lemon-scented catmints reportedly do not attract cats. The botanical name Nepeta likely comes from the name of the ancient Etruscan city Nepet - Nepi in the territory of today's Italian province of Viterbo, where the plant was once cultivated. Nepeta racemosa naturally grows on dry meadows and rocky, stony slopes from the Caucasus to Central Asia. It has aromatic grey-green leaves and forms a tufted semi-spherical bush. Walker’s Low got its name after an Irish estate where it was bred in 1970. It has the most intense blue-violet flower coloration.

Pokud hledáte originální a bezúdržbovou trvalku na slunná místa, pěstování šuškardy vás určitě nadchne. Jelikož dodáváme kvalitní a dobře prokořeněné sazenice v květináčích, odpadá vám starost s náročným klíčením a rostlinu můžete bez obav vysadit na záhon rovnou. Nejvíce jí vyhovuje horké slunné stanoviště a propustná, na humus bohatá zemina. Výborně snáší i sušší půdní podmínky, ale musíte si dát pozor na místa, kde se na podzim nebo na jaře drží voda. V přemokřené, těžké jílovité půdě by její hlíznaté kořeny mohly rychle uhnít. Rostliny sázejte s rozestupem pětadvacet centimetrů od sebe, což dělá zhruba devět až dvanáct kusů na metr čtvereční. V tomto sponu se nebudou vzájemně utlačovat a vytvoří hustý, ale vzdušný porost.
Péče o šuškardu v průběhu roku nevyžaduje žádné odborné znalosti, což z ní dělá ideální volbu pro začátečníky. Pro úspěšné pěstování se držte několika základních pravidel:
- Zálivka: Vodu dodávejte rostlině s rozumem, střední zálivka je naprosto ideální. Jakmile sazenice dobře zakoření, zvládne i delší období bez deště.
- Hnojení: Pro bohatou násadu květů můžete na jaře přidat trochu běžného zahradního kompostu, ale další přihnojování během léta už není potřeba.
- Opora a údržba: Květenství se otevírají neobvykle odshora dolů a pevné stonky nepotřebují žádnou oporu.
- Zdraví rostliny: Šuškarda je navíc velmi odolná, nepotýká se s žádnými nepříjemnými chorobami. Jediným nepřítelem v zahradě může být hraboš polní.
Zazimování této vytrvalé byliny je naprosto bezstarostné. Šuškarda vyniká extrémní mrazuvzdorností, hravě odolá teplotám klesajícím až k minus třiceti čtyřem stupňům Celsia. Na podzim se nemusíte trápit s žádným stříháním, suché stonky s odkvetlými klasy naopak na záhoně ponechte. Vytvářejí totiž velmi poutavý zimní efekt, zvlášť když je ojíněná rána ozdobí krystalky ledu. Jarní úklid pak spočívá jen v tom, že odumřelé nadzemní části seříznete blízko u země, a tím uvolníte cestu pro čerstvé zelené listy. Pokud si přejete pěstovat šuškardu v nádobě, i to je skvělá volba. Stačí zvolit větší květináč s drenážními otvory na dně a zajistit pravidelnější zálivku, jelikož substrát na slunném balkóně vysychá mnohem rychleji než volná půda v zahradě.

Precisely because of this rare peculiarity, where its long inflorescences bloom unconventionally from the tip downwards, it earned its fitting alternative Czech name "shorakvět" (top-flower). Its roots reach the sunny prairies and grassy meadows of North America, which is why it thrives most in direct sun in our gardens too. Blazing star grows to a height of sixty to ninety centimeters, and its sturdy stems with narrow green leaves stand perfectly straight even without artificial support. It easily tolerates extreme frosts well below minus thirty degrees and naturally avoids all diseases. You should only be on the lookout if you have field voles in the garden, which may be attracted to its swollen tubers. It has a semi-double pure white flower, often with inner twisted petals, and compact, strictly upright growth. The flowers are very durable.
