As soon as your Sweet rocket seedlings arrive, we recommend planting them as soon as possible into well-prepared soil. This plant loves a humus-rich and nutritious foundation that holds moisture well but at the same time allows water to drain. Before planting, it is advisable to loosen the soil and enrich it with mature compost. The ideal location is partial shade, where the flowers will stay fresh longer, but Sweet rocket also tolerates the sun well if provided with sufficient moisture. Thanks to its height of 60–100 cm, it is suitable for the middle or back areas of borders, where it forms a beautiful backdrop for lower perennials or as a companion for roses, with which it shares similar soil requirements. Maintain spacing of at least 40 cm so the plants don't stretch and are sturdy.
Caring for Sweet rocket is easy and can be handled even by a beginner. Adjust watering according to the weather – the soil should remain slightly moist, but never muddy. The plant is naturally vigorous and resistant to pests and diseases, so chemical protection is generally not necessary. It is important to know that it is a short-lived perennial. If you want to encourage its longevity and a possible second flush of blooms, cut back the faded stems before they start forming seeds. Conversely, if you desire a natural-looking cottage garden, let at least one plant self-seed – Sweet rocket will take care of its offspring itself. Its frost resistance is excellent (zone 3a), so it will overwinter in the garden without any winter covering.
If you don't have a garden, you can also grow Sweet rocket in a large planter or pot on a balcony or terrace. The container must have drainage holes and a layer of gravel or expanded clay at the bottom. In the limited space of a container, nutrients run out faster, so fertilize every 14 days with a blooming plant fertilizer during flowering. Do not forget that the substrate dries out faster in a pot, so check the moisture more often than in a garden bed. Sweet rocket will reward your care with edible flowers and a breathtaking evening fragrance that will turn your outdoor sitting into an unforgettable experience.
