Šalvěj Nachtvlinder je skutečným klenotem mezi přenosnými rostlinami, který si vás získá svou nevšední barvou i vytrvalostí. Původní druh Salvia greggii pochází ze slunných a suchých polopouštních oblastí Texasu a Mexika, kde roste na kamenitých a chudých půdách. Díky tomu je i u nás velmi nenáročná na zálivku a miluje plné slunce. V našich podmínkách ji pěstujeme nejčastěji jako přenosnou rostlinu v nádobách na terasách či balkonech, protože její mrazuvzdornost sahá pouze k -12 °C. Na zimu ji proto doporučujeme schovat na bezmrazé světlé místo, případně ji v nejteplejších oblastech republiky pečlivě zakrýt.
Odrůda Nachtvlinder, jejíž název v překladu znamená noční motýl, vás okouzlí sametovými květy v hlubokém odstínu švestkově fialové. Její obrovskou předností je neuvěřitelně dlouhá doba kvetení, která začíná v květnu a často končí až s příchodem silnějších mrazů v listopadu. Celá rostlina je silně aromatická a při doteku uvolňuje příjemnou kořenitou vůni. Květy jsou navíc jedlé a sladké, takže se skvěle hodí jako netradiční ozdoba letních salátů nebo dezertů. Přiláká k vám také velké množství včel a dalšího užitečného hmyzu.

Salvia greggii, často nazývaná šalvěj podzimní, je v případě kultivaru Dancing Dolls neúnavným vytrvalcem, který vaše zahradní nádoby ozdobí květy od pozdního jara až do zámrazu. Její domovinou jsou polopouštní oblasti Severní Ameriky, proto miluje slunce, teplo a sušší, propustný substrát. Roste jako nízký, hustě větvený polokeř, který se snadno tvaruje a udržuje. Tato nádherná odrůda šalvěje, známá jako 'Noční motýl', je díky svému kompaktnímu růstu a původu ideální volbou pro pěstování v nádobách na terasách a balkonech. Jelikož k vám dorazí již jako zapěstovaná sazenice, doporučujeme ji po obdržení přesadit do prostornějšího květináče, který zajistí kořenům dostatek místa. Naprosto klíčová je pro tuto rostlinu drenážní vrstva – na dno nádoby nasypte štěrk nebo keramzit, aby přebytečná voda mohla volně odtékat. Co se týče substrátu, šalvěj Salvia greggii nevyžaduje žádné speciální výživné směsi; naopak jí svědčí chudá, propustná a písčitá půda. Můžete smíchat běžný zahradnický substrát s pískem nebo drobným štěrkem v poměru 1:1. Stanoviště volte co nejslunnější, protože jen na plném slunci se plně rozvine intenzivní fialová barva květů a silné aroma listů.
Při péči o tuto šalvěj platí pravidlo „méně je více“, zejména co se týče zálivky. Je to rostlina zvyklá na suché podmínky Texasu a Mexika, proto ji zalévejte až ve chvíli, kdy je substrát zcela proschlý. Přemokření je pro ni mnohem nebezpečnější než krátkodobé sucho. Hnojení není nutné přehánět, stačí jednou za měsíc během vegetace použít hnojivo s nízkým obsahem dusíku, aby rostlina spíše kvetla, než jen tvořila listy. Velkou výhodou této odrůdy je její vynikající zdravotní stav, netrpí na běžné choroby ani škůdce, takže se nemusíte obávat nutnosti chemických postřiků. Pokud budete pravidelně odstraňovat odkvetlé květenství, podpoříte násadu nových poupat a rostlina vás bude těšit svými květy od května až do pozdního podzimu.
Protože mrazuvzdornost této šalvěje dosahuje hranice přibližně -12 °C, v našich podmínkách ji pěstujeme primárně jako přenosnou rostlinu. S příchodem prvních silnějších mrazů (listopad/prosinec) je nutné rostlinu přestěhovat na světlé bezmrazé místo, kde se teplota pohybuje ideálně mezi 5 až 10 °C (například zimní zahrada, chladná chodba nebo garáž s oknem). Během zimy zálivku omezte na naprosté minimum, jen aby kořenový bal zcela nevyschl. Na jaře, jakmile pominou mrazy, proveďte zpětný řez zhruba na polovinu až dvě třetiny délky výhonů. Tento zásah rostlinu omladí, zahustí a připraví na novou sezónu plnou květů.
