The 'Hot Lips' Sage is a true chameleon among garden perennials and immediately attracts attention with its changing flowers. This shrubby sage, Latin name Salvia microphylla, comes from the mountainous regions of Mexico and the southern USA, where it grows on sunny and dry slopes. Its greatest advantage is its two-tone flowers combining pure white and a striking carmine red color. An interesting feature of this cultivar is the dependence of its coloring on the air temperature, when in hot summer days the flowers can turn red, while in cooler periods more white appears. The whole plant smells intensely and pleasantly when the leaves are rubbed, the aroma often resembling blackcurrant with a hint of mint.
In the garden, it is mainly used as a portable plant in containers on terraces or balconies, as its frost resistance reaches only -12 °C. If you live in the warmest regions of the country, you can try planting it in the open ground in a protected location with well-drained soil and winter covering, but overwintering it in a frost-free room is a safer bet. It blooms tirelessly from June until the first frosts and is literally a magnet for bees, bumblebees, and other pollinators. Lemon verbena, also known as aloysia, will immediately enchant you with its intense and refreshing lemon scent. It originally comes from the warm regions of South America, and therefore it requires full sun and well-drained soil in our climate too. Because it only tolerates frosts down to minus twelve degrees, it is most often grown here as a portable container plant that you hide in a cooler, bright room for the winter. You will receive a grown seedling in a pot from us, which you just need to transplant into a larger container or a protected flowerbed. During July and August, the plant blooms with tiny white flowers, which act as a reliable attraction for bees and other pollinators. Verbena does not suffer from pests or diseases, so even beginners can handle growing it. Since the seventeenth century in Europe, it has been used as a valuable source of essential oils for perfume production. You can harvest the green leaves and use them as a culinary herb in summer dishes or as a fragrant addition to teas. Aromatic sprigs can also be cut and added to summer bouquets.

Pěstování této atraktivní šalvěje začíná výběrem správného stanoviště, protože rostlinu obdržíte jako již zapěstovanou sazenici připravenou k okamžité výsadbě. Salvia microphylla vyžaduje co nejslunnější pozici, ideálně na plném slunci, kde se jí bude dařit nejlépe a kde se naplno projeví unikátní dvuobarevnost jejích květů. Půda by měla být propustná, humózní a hlinitá. Zásadní je, aby zemina nebyla těžká a jílovitá, protože rostlina nesnáší přemokření, které by mohlo vést k uhnívání kořenů. Pokud máte na zahradě těžší půdu, je nutné při výsadbě zapracovat písek nebo štěrk pro lepší drenáž. Při výsadbě do volné půdy dodržujte spon 40–60 cm, aby měly rostliny dostatek prostoru a vzduchu, což přirozeně předchází houbovým chorobám, i když tento kultivar na ně a ani na škůdce netrpí.
Vzhledem k tomu, že mrazuvzdornost této šalvěje dosahuje pouze k -12 °C, je pro většinu pěstitelů v České republice ideální volbou pěstování v nádobách či truhlících. Květináč by měl mít na dně drenážní vrstvu z kamínků nebo keramzitu a odtokové otvory. Díky pěstování v nádobě si můžete užívat její krásu a vůni připomínající černý rybíz přímo na terase či balkoně. Zálivku vyžaduje mírnou, substrát by měl mezi jednotlivými zálivkami vždy lehce proschnout. V období kvetení, které trvá od června až do října, doporučujeme přihnojovat hnojivem pro kvetoucí rostliny, což podpoří násadu nových poupat. Nezapomeňte také průběžně odstraňovat odkvetlé části, čímž rostlinu stimulujete k další tvorbě květů.
Klíčovým momentem péče je přezimování. Pokud pěstujete šalvěj 'Hot Lips' v nádobě, před příchodem silnějších mrazů ji přeneste do světlé bezmrazé místnosti (například chodba, zimní zahrada nebo garáž s oknem), kde se teplota pohybuje ideálně mezi 5 a 10 °C. Během zimy zálivku omezte na minimum, pouze tak, aby kořenový bal zcela nevyschl. Pokud bydlíte v nejteplejších oblastech (zóna 7b) a rozhodnete se riskovat výsadbu venku, vyberte chráněné místo u jižní zdi a na zimu rostlinu pečlivě zakryjte chvojím nebo netkanou textilií. Na jaře, jakmile pominou mrazy, proveďte zpětný řez zhruba na polovinu až třetinu výšky. Tento zásah rostlinu omladí, zahustí a zajistí bohaté kvetení v nové sezóně.

Its homeland is the semi-desert regions of North America, so it loves sun, heat, and a drier, well-drained substrate. It grows as a low, densely branched subshrub that is easy to shape and maintain. Although cultivation is undemanding and suitable even for beginners, it is necessary to keep its limited frost hardiness in mind. The pale coneflower is one of the exceptionally interesting prairie perennials of the North American continent. In its natural environment, it grows on open, sunny plains, which is why it thrives best in our gardens in full sun in drier, well-drained soil. You just need to transplant this grown seedling straight into the flower bed, where it will reliably take root. It does not need support, easily withstands severe frosts, and is avoided by common diseases and pests, making it ideal for beginner growers. During June and July, it will reward you with aromatic flowers with unusually narrow and drooping petals in light purple and pink tones.
