Šalvěj Viola's Darling je třeba dopřát to nejslunnější místo, jaké na své zahradě, terase nebo balkonu máte. Stín či polostín by způsobil vytahování výhonů, slabé kvetení a ztrátu kompaktního tvaru. Půda musí být extrémně propustná, lehká a spíše chudší na živiny. Těžké, jílovité a mokré zeminy jsou pro tuto šalvěj nevhodné, protože v nich trpí hnilobou kořenů, zejména v zimním období. Při výsadbě do volné půdy i do nádob proto neváhejte smíchat zeminu s pískem nebo drobným štěrkem v poměru 1:1, abyste zajistili dokonalý odtok přebytečné vody. Pokud sázíte rostlinu do volné půdy, doporučujeme na dno výsadbové jámy vložit drenážní vrstvu z kamínků.
Vzhledem k tomu, že Salvia greggii je v našich podmínkách mrazuvzdorná pouze do -12 °C (zóna 8a), je pro většinu pěstitelů v České republice nejvhodnější pěstování v nádobách. Květináč by měl mít na dně otvor pro odtok vody a silnou vrstvu drenáže (například keramzit). Díky pěstování v nádobě můžete rostlinu na jaře, jakmile pominou mrazy, umístit ven a užívat si její záplavu lila květů až do pozdního podzimu. Na zimu ji pak jednoduše přenesete do chladné, světlé místnosti (chodba, zimní zahrada, garáž s oknem), kde se teplota pohybuje mezi 5 až 10 °C. Pokud bydlíte v nejteplejších vinařských oblastech a chcete zkusit pěstování venku, vyberte chráněné místo u jižní zdi domu a na zimu rostlinu pečlivě přikryjte vysokou vrstvou suchého listí a chvojí, aby kořeny nepromrzly.
Péče o tuto šalvěj je překvapivě snadná a zvládne ji i úplný začátečník, rostlina navíc netrpí na žádné běžné choroby ani škůdce. Zálivka by měla být spíše mírná; rostlina velmi dobře snáší krátkodobé sucho, zatímco trvalé přemokření ji hubí. Zalévejte tedy až ve chvíli, kdy povrch substrátu proschne. Co se týče hnojení, buďte střídmí – příliš mnoho dusíku podpoří růst listů na úkor květů. Stačí jednou za měsíc během sezóny přihnojit hnojivem pro bylinky nebo kvetoucí rostliny. Velkou výhodou této odrůdy je její opakované kvetení. Pokud v průběhu léta rostlinu mírně sestřihnete (odstraníte odkvetlé stonky), podpoříte tím násadu nových poupat a udržíté keřík hustý a kompaktní. Jelikož jsou květy i listy jedlé a aromatické, můžete je bez obav používat v kuchyni, což je další důvod, proč používat spíše organická hnojiva.
