Salvia greggii, často nazývaná šalvěj podzimní, je v případě kultivaru Dancing Dolls neúnavným vytrvalcem, který vaše zahradní nádoby ozdobí květy od pozdního jara až do zámrazu. Její domovinou jsou polopouštní oblasti Severní Ameriky, proto miluje slunce, teplo a sušší, propustný substrát. Roste jako nízký, hustě větvený polokeř, který se snadno tvaruje a udržuje. Ačkoliv je pěstování nenáročné a vhodné i pro začátečníky, je třeba myslet na její limitovanou mrazuvzdornost. V českých podmínkách se tato šalvěj nejlépe uplatní jako dominantní prvek v květináčích na terasách, které na zimu snadno přenesete do bezmrazého prostoru, případně ji lze vysadit do velmi chráněných, slunných záhonů s kvalitní drenáží a zimním krytem.
Odrůda Dancing Dolls vnáší do výsadeb hravost a jemnost díky unikátnímu zbarvení květů, které střídají tóny pastelově růžové s krémově bílou. Drobné pyskaté květy vyrůstají v hojném počtu na koncích vzpřímených stonků a působí velmi vzdušným dojmem. Kromě estetické hodnoty je tato rostlina také užitečná – její silně aromatické listy i sladké květy jsou jedlé a lze je využít v kuchyni jako originální ozdobu pokrmů. Tato odrůda je typickou přenosnou rostlinou, což znamená, že v našich podmínkách nejlépe prospívá v nádobách, které na zimu schováte. Pro úspěšné pěstování je naprosto klíčové slunné stanoviště. Vyberte jí to nejteplejší místo na terase nebo balkoně, ideálně orientované na jih. Stín této rostlině nesvědčí, ve stínu by vytahovala stonky za světlem a méně kvetla. Co se týče substrátu, pamatujte na původ rostliny v polopouštních oblastech. Zemina musí být velmi propustná, lehčí a písčitá. Pokud sázíte do květináče, určitě na dno nasypte vrstvu keramzitu nebo štěrku a pěstební substrát promíchejte s pískem či perlitem, aby voda rychle odtékala. Přemokření je totiž jedním z mála faktorů, které mohou tuto jinak odolnou rostlinu zahubit.
Péče během sezóny je překvapivě snadná a zvládne ji i úplný začátečník. Zálivku volte spíše střídmou; nechte substrát mezi zaléváním mírně proschnout. Hnojení není nutné přehánět, stačí jednou za čas použít hnojivo pro kvetoucí rostliny, ale šalvěj si poradí i v chudší půdě. Aby vám rostlina dělala radost záplavou růžovo-bílých květů od května až do prvních mrazíků, doporučujeme pravidelně zaštipovat odkvetlá květenství. Tento jednoduchý úkon podpoří tvorbu nových poupat a udrží keřík kompaktní. Velkou výhodou je, že tato odrůda netrpí na škůdce ani choroby, takže se obejdete bez chemických postřiků, což oceníte zejména proto, že listy i květy jsou jedlé a skvěle se hodí na ozdobu salátů či dezertů.
S příchodem podzimu je třeba myslet na zimování. Ačkoliv rostlina snese mráz až k -12 °C, v nádobě promrzají kořeny mnohem rychleji než ve volné půdě a česká zima bývá vlhká, což šalvěji škodí více než samotný chlad. Nejbezpečnější je proto rostlinu před silnějšími mrazy přenést do světlé, bezmrazé místnosti (například chodba, garáž nebo zimní zahrada), kde se teplota pohybuje ideálně mezi 5 až 10 °C. Zde omezte zálivku na minimum. Pokud byste se rozhodli riskovat výsadbu do volné půdy (pouze v nejteplejších vinařských oblastech), vyberte chráněné místo u jižní zdi, zajistěte dokonalou drenáž a rostlinu na zimu pečlivě přikryjte chvojím. Na jaře pak proveďte hlubší zpětný řez, kterým keřík zmladíte a připravíte na novou sezónu.
