Cultivation
Mateřídouška Doone Valley miluje sluneční paprsky a teplá místa. Nejlépe se jí daří na přímém, horkém slunci, kde se naplno rozvine její citronová vůně i nápadné žlutozelené panašování listů. Pro úspěšné pěstování je naprosto zásadní dobře propustná, ideálně chudší písčitá nebo štěrkovitá půda. Těžké a trvale zamokřené zeminy jí vyloženě nesvědčí, protože kořeny v nich mohou rychle zahnívat. Pokud máte na zahradě spíše hutnější půdu, před samotnou výsadbou do ní přimíchejte větší množství hrubého písku nebo drobného štěrku. Tím zajistíte optimální odvodnění, které tato drobná, pět až patnáct centimetrů vysoká trvalka ke svému zdravému růstu nutně potřebuje.
Vaši novou sazenici můžete sázet od jara do časného podzimu. Pro vytvoření hustého, souvislého koberce, který brzy zaplní prázdná místa, doporučujeme sázet rostliny ve sponu zhruba 25 centimetrů od sebe, což odpovídá přibližně šestnácti sazenicím na metr čtvereční. Po výsadbě rostlinu mírně zalijte, ale jakmile zakoření, stane se z ní vynikající suchomilná rostlina. Zálivka je pak nutná pouze během velmi dlouhých období bez deště. Hnojení není u této nenáročné krásky vůbec potřeba, v chudé půdě je dokonce její aroma mnohem intenzivnější a listy lépe vybarvené.
Údržba během sezóny je zcela minimální, a proto je rostlina vhodná i pro naprosté začátečníky. Po odkvětu růžových květů na přelomu června a července doporučujeme mateřídoušku mírně sestřihnout. Tento lehký řez podpoří kompaktní růst a zabrání vyholování výhonů od středu. Mateřídouška netrpí na žádné choroby a škůdci se jí díky jejím aromatickým silicím vyhýbají. Je plně mrazuvzdorná až do mínus třiadvaceti stupňů. Jediným nepřítelem v zimě může být nadměrné vlhko. V chladných měsících vás navíc potěší krásným přebarvením do starorůžových tónů.
Tuto voňavou odrůdu můžete naprosto bez obav pěstovat i na balkonech a terasách. Při pěstování v nádobách pamatujte na několik základních pravidel:
- Použijte nádobu s odtokovými otvory, aby se voda nedržela u kořenů.
- Na dno nasypte dostatečnou drenážní vrstvu, například z keramzitu nebo drobných kamínků.
- Substrát smíchejte s pískem pro maximální propustnost.
- Rostliny v nádobách vysychají rychleji, proto je v létě pravidelně kontrolujte a zalévejte, vždy ale až po mírném proschnutí povrchu zeminy.
